Maharashtra Elections Result 2026 Live: Nagpur civic battle, independent surge and urban verdict seen as preview of 2029 assembly elections
In Nagpur Municipal Corporation, this time the contest is a direct fight between the ruling Mahayuti alliance and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). A total of 993 candidates are in the fray in Nagpur, including 585 men and 408 women. The election has also seen a significant surge in independent candidates, with 236 contestants running without party affiliation — many of them rebels who were denied tickets by major political parties. More broadly, polling held on January 15, 2026, across Maharashtra’s 29 municipal corporations is being viewed as far more than a contest for local power. Political observers see these civic elections as a crucial signal ahead of the 2029 assembly elections. Analysts say the results announced today will offer key insights into the future direction of state politics. Coming after the Lok Sabha and assembly elections, these urban polls are widely being described as a “semi-final” ahead of 2029. The verdict is expected to indicate whether the BJP-led alliance can retain its dominance in urban centres or if the Maha Vikas Aghadi is staging a comeback in Maharashtra’s cities.

Maharashtra Elections Result 2026 Live: State has entered era of `strange relations', says J&K CM Omar Abdullah
Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said Maharashtra has entered an era of "strange relations" where friends and enemies swap roles in the battle for the local body polls. The ongoing elections have seen the rival NCP factions coming together in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, while there was a post-poll alliance of BJP, Congress and NCP in Ambernath council and that of BJP and AIMIM in Akot. The leadership of both the BJP and Congress, however, said they did not approve of these tie-ups. "There were no friends, no enemies. Friends became enemies and enemies became friends. And strange relations were formed," Abdullah told reporters while describing the current political atmosphere in the state. He was speaking to reporters after visiting the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT) in Mumbai. "Somewhere Congress and BJP shook hands. Somewhere BJP and AIMIM shook hands. Somewhere two parts of one party came together again. What will be the impact of all this on the results? I am also waiting impatiently," he added. Responding to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's remark that voting is essential for a healthy democracy, Abdullah said public participation is key to driving change, and it begins with citizens stepping out to vote.

The Asaduddin Owaisi-led party won a total of 126 seats across municipal corporations, significantly improving its footprint despite organisational turmoil under state president and former MP Syed Imtiaz Jaleel.
