NDA inducts SIG 716 rifles to train future military leaders
Pune: The National Defence Academy (NDA) has inducted the SIG 716 assault rifle into its training curriculum, ensuring that cadets are familiarised with modern battlefield weaponry at an early stage of their military grooming. The SIG 716, manufactured by US-based SIG Sauer, is currently the Indian Army's primary battle rifle. It is extensively deployed by frontline troops in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations, particularly in sensitive high-altitude and border areas.According to senior Army officials, the inclusion of the rifle in the NDA's armoury is a strategic move to expose future officers to the latest infantry weapon systems before they move to their respective service academies and operational units."The academy maintains a variety of small arms, including pistols and other weapons used by the forces. The SIG 716 has been added to give cadets first-hand experience in operating modern, high-performance rifles," a senior Army officer told TOI on the condition of anonymity. "The objective is to improve firing standards and combat shooting skills well before these cadets are commissioned as officers."The induction is part of a broader effort by the armed forces to modernise military training, ensuring it keeps pace with evolving technological advancements in warfare. By integrating the SIG 716, the academy aims to enhance realism in training and prepare cadets for the contemporary challenges they will face across diverse operational theaters. While the NDA trains cadets from the Army, Navy, and Air Force together, weapons training is a cornerstone of the curriculum, particularly for Army-bound cadets. The programme emphasizes firing accuracy, tactical movement, and weapon handling.According to NDA sources, the training is structured to progressively build proficiency. "Cadets in their fourth term begin practicing firing for a few days, while those in their fifth and sixth terms have dedicated firing periods. Instructors focus on both ‘application firing'—combat-oriented exercises under simulated battlefield conditions—and ‘classification firing,' which assesses a cadet's individual competency and accuracy," the source added. The SIG 716, chambered for the 7.62x51 mm caliber, was procured by the Indian Army under a fast-track acquisition in 2019 to enhance infantry firepower. Compared to older generation rifles like the Indian Small Arms System (INSAS), the SIG 716 is known for its superior stopping power, improved accuracy, and reliability in harsh terrain and extreme weather."Early exposure to such advanced systems is vital," said a senior infantry officer. "It helps future officers understand modern combat requirements and allows them to adapt quickly once they are posted to active units after commissioning."The SIG 716 joins a diverse arsenal at the NDA that includes INSAS rifles, carbines, light machine guns (LMGs), and various pistols.
