DHANBAD: Doctors in the coal belt are themselves sick. According to astudy conducted on about 100 doctors of the coal belt, 65 % of them are patients of hypertention and 35 %are diabetic.
The study shows 25 % of the doctors have abnormal lipid profile and 15 % of them are chain smokers. Presenting a paper on the health of doctors at the annual conference of Jharkhand unit of Indian Medical Association at the Central Mining and Fuel Research Institute here on Sunday,
Dr N K Singh,the director of Dhanbad Heart centre,said doctors are victims of silent killers like,anxiety, depression,obesity, chest and renal disorders and also sexual problems.
Dr Singh advised the doctors, "Do not rebuke someone for a fault or problem you have yourself. He regretted the fact that doctors exist in "a culture of denial" with regard to their own health and 90% of them treat themselves.
The prevalence of mental health problems among doctors is higher than among people in equivalent professions.
