SURAT: An undertrial lodged in Lajpor Central Jail tried to end his life by consuming nearly 22 tablets given to him for fever. Hitesh Solanki (22), a resident of Begampura area, reportedly did an overdose of the medicines, alleging that he was forced to do more petty work by other inmates. Solanki was lodged in the jail in a theft case.
He was shifted to New Civil Hospital (NCH) after his condition deteriorated.

Meanwhile, a youth detained for questioning by the crime branch also consumed phenyl. Viru Devipujak, a resident of Varachha, was brought to the crime branch office for interrogation for his suspected involvement in a chain snatching incident on Tuesday. At around 10pm, he went to the toilet and consumed phenyl.
He was also shifted to NCH for treatment. The condition of both is said to be out of danger.
