Thane: Following the
accident on Friday morning in which four youth were killed, the city traffic department began a late night drive on Ghodbunder (GB) Road. During the drive that began at 11pm the cops caught 109 offenders who were found flouting traffic norms.
As the cops carried out a sudden drive, motorists were caught unawares. Motorists were found riding without helmets, not wearing seat belts, speeding, etc.
The cops were targeting heavy and multi-axle vehicles who mostly travel without proper reflectors or tail lights. This leads to accidents in most cases.
GB Road witnesses a lot of heavy vechiles, especially late at night. So, in order to crackdown on vehicles flouting rules under the Motor Vehicle Act the cops carried out the drive between 11pm and 4am. The sleuths will continue patrolling areas and will target all accident zones in the city.
The cops will also be carrying breath analysers to check for any drunk driving cases. DCP Rashmi Karandikar said, ‘‘Going by past records, fatal accidents along GB Road is mostly due to the lax attitude of motorists. So, we decided to patrol the entire stretch at night to keep an eye on law breakers. The presence of a cop on the road can act as a deterrent for offenders.’’
Meanwhile, the Kapurbawdi police are investigating the Friday accident wherein four youth travelling on a motorcycle were killed after a speeding vehicle rammed into them. The youth had attended the Ganesh immersion festivities and were on the look out for a wayside hotel. The cops suspect that the victims were d runk at the time of the accident.
