Man held for attacking wife
T’puram: Fort police arrested a man for allegedly assaulting and seriously injuring his wife after she refused to give him money to buy alcohol. The incident occurred at Chirappalam Mini Colony under the jurisdiction of Fort police station around 1am on Sunday.
The accused was identified as Kumardas, 40, of East Fort. According to police, he allegedly became enraged after his wife refused to provide him with money.
Police said the accused verbally abused the woman, strangled her, burnt her with a cigarette and brutally assaulted her using a stick. The woman sustained serious injuries in the attack and was later admitted at general hospital for treatment.
Following the incident, Fort police launched an investigation and arrested the accused. Police officers said Kumardas has a criminal background and is involved in around seven assault cases registered at Fort, Thampanoor, Karamana and Vanchiyoor police stations.
Kumardas was produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody. Police said further investigation is under way.
