Trichy: Trichy MP Durai Vaiko on Tuesday urged the district administration to allocate 21 acres of land for developing a dry port in the district to strengthen trade and improve exports from the central region. The MP who submitted requests to several Union ministers including finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in this regard, called upon the district administration to identify suitable land at the earliest for setting up the facility similar to the one in Tirupur.
A dry port with storage areas and offices for govt departments, including customs and GST, would help exporters complete required documentation and containerization locally, significantly reducing cost and time in transport. As the facility would help food-based industries and engineering units improve their exports, Durai Vaiko met district collector V Saravanan on Tuesday seeking land at the earliest. "I have met four Union ministers in New Delhi, and they have expressed optimism in implementing a dry port in Trichy. We need suitable land parcels near national or state highways to support the logistic needs," Durai Vaiko said.
Earlier, the MP also met divisional railway manager Balak Ram Negi seeking no objection certificate (NOC) from the division to utilize a portion of railway land in G Corner junction on Trichy-Chennai national highway to construct an elevated rotary to decongest traffic. The DRM assured his support and acknowledged guidelines received from the railway ministry for the proposed rotary at G Corner, the MP added.
