VADODARA: The city police has ordered that all its traffic personnel as well as personnel on vehicle-checking duties will not carry cane sticks in their hands. The order has been issued in wake of a youth being injured on Monday evening while he was stopped by a cop wielding a stick.
Isaq Sheikh, 19, a resident of Ajwa Road was riding pillion on a friend's bike and the duo was passing by the Waghodiya Crossroads when a policeman wielding a 'lathi' stopped them by extending the cane.

While Sheikh's friend ducked, Sheikh sustained an injury on his eye. The policeman involved in the incident allegedly left the spot when he saw Sheikh was injured.
Sheikh was rushed to the SSG Hospital for treatment. An offence was registered by the police regarding the incident and the city police commissioner Satish Sharma has also ordered an inquiry in the matter. Sharma said that in wake of the incident and to prevent such episodes in the future, traffic policemen and those on vehicle-checking duties have been asked not to use canes.
It had become a common practice of police personnel to wield 'lathis' and extend them when they wanted to stop a vehicle. They will now have to make do with their hands. Sources said that while the offence against police constable Dinesh Manilal was registered at the Panigate police station, it will be investigated by an assistant commissioner of police.
