The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday announced that Cyclone Montha has weakened into a cyclonic storm over coastal Andhra Pradesh and is expected to maintain its current intensity for the next six hours.
According to IMD, the Severe Cyclonic Storm Montha moved northwestwards at a speed of around 10 kmph over the past six hours before weakening into a cyclonic storm. As of 2:30 am (IST) on October 29, 2025, the system was centered near latitude 16.5°N and longitude 81.5°E, approximately 20 km west-northwest of Narsapur, 50 km northeast of Machilipatnam, 90 km west-southwest of Kakinada, 230 km southwest of Visakhapatnam, and 470 km southwest of Gopalpur in Odisha. The IMD said Montha is likely to continue moving northwestward across coastal Andhra Pradesh, maintaining its cyclonic strength for another six hours before weakening into a deep depression later. Latest observations also indicate that the rear section of the storm has made landfall, marking the gradual weakening phase of the system.

'Montha' impact: Heavy rains lash parts of Telangana, IMD sounds red alert for 8 districts
Heavy rains lashed different parts of Telangana on Wednesday due to the impact of severe cyclonic storm 'Montha', which crossed the coast in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh overnight. One person died and another was feared washed away in separate rain-related incidents.
In Telangana, Warangal, Jangaon, Hanumakonda, Mahabubabad, Karimnagar, Siddipet, Rajanna Sircilla, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Suryapet, Nalgonda, Khammam, Nagarkurnool, Peddapalli, Bhadradri Kothagudem, were among the districts that witnessed downpour, with rain lashing Hyderabad also.
Bheemadevarapalle in Hanumakonda district received 412.3 mm rainfall, followed by Kalleda 382.3 mm, Urus 336.8 mm and Redlawada 333.3 mm in Warangal district, from 8.30 AM to 9 PM, the Telangana Development Planning Society said.

Odisha chief fire officer Ramesh Chandra Majhi on impact of cyclone 'Montha'
On impact of cyclone 'Montha', Odisha Chief Fire Officer Ramesh Chandra Majhi said, "Following the cyclone, Odisha Fire and Emergency Services Department received a total of 50 reports related to road clearance and fallen trees across various districts. In Ganjam, teams cleared fallen trees at nine locations, while in Gajapati, they attended to 15 such incidents. In Kandhamal, 3 locations were cleared, and in Koraput, teams cleared 14 locations. Additionally, 2 locations in Malkangiri and 7 in Rayagada were cleared. In Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, and Berhampur, waterlogged areas were drained. The department successfully managed to maintain zero casualties as per the Chief Minister's directive, with 123 teams on alert and actively working in affected areas. The overall situation is now normal with no further risk of heavy rain or strong winds... The only significant incident was a landslide in Gajapati which completely blocked a road, and a minor landslide in Malkangiri..."

Two died due to cyclone; precautionary measures minimised losses: Andhra CM
Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu said two persons died in the state due to the severe cyclonic storm 'Montha'. and noted that precautionary measure had "minimised the loss."
Naidu called on the entire government machinery to continue their efforts for another two days to provide further relief to cyclone-affected people.
"If we work in the same way for another two days, we can give much relief to people. Due to the cyclone, two persons died," Naidu said in a release.
He directed officials to restore normalcy at the earliest and instructed ministers and senior officials to visit affected areas and address people's grievances.
The CM also asked departments to assess the damage caused by the cyclone and furnish details to the union government.
He further ordered the distribution of essential supplies to affected families and appreciated the efforts of the SDRF, police, and fire service personnel in clearing uprooted trees and snapped power lines "on a war footing".
To restore damaged power infrastructure, the CM said 10,000 personnel were kept on standby, adding that power supply would be normalised by this afternoon.

Cyclone 'Montha': CM Revanth Reddy puts administration on high alert
Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Wednesday directed the entire state administration to remain on high alert following heavy rains triggered by Cyclone 'Montha'.
Reviewing the cyclone's impact, particularly on paddy harvesting, he instructed the authorities to take necessary precautions to minimise losses, an official release said.
He ordered special arrangements at paddy and cotton procurement centres.

Following the landfall of Cyclone Montha, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) of Bhubaneswar stated that 25 places in Odisha reported heavy rainfall, said IMD Bhubaneswar Director Manorama Mohanty on Wednesday. The IMD Director in Bhubaneswar said that Gajapati district reported the highest maximum rainfall of 150.5 millimetres, with isolated heavy rain forecast for the next 24 hours. She further mentioned that rainfall is likely across the state, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. "In the last 24 hours, in the state of Odisha, 25 places reported heavy rainfall, and two places reported very heavy rainfall, and the highest maximum rainfall was reported in the district of Gajapati, 150.5 millimetres and forecast for next 24 hours is isolated heavy rainfall activity; however entire state is likely to get rainfall activity at many places with thunderstorm, lightning and even gusty wind will be there...Isolated heavy rainfall warnings are in effect for districts such as Korrapur, Malkagiri, Raiga, Ganjampati, Sundargarh, Kyunj, Baleshwar, and Badra," Mohanty told ANI.

Cyclone Montha Live Updates: Crops on 38,000 hectare land destroyed in Andhra
Citing preliminary estimates, the Andhra Pradesh government had noted on Tuesday that standing agricultural crops in as many as 38,000 hectares were destroyed due to the impact of Montha and horticulture crops in 1.38 lakh hectares were damaged too. Government will distribute 25 kg rice and red gram dal, cooking oil, onions, potatoes and sugar, one kg each. For weavers and fishermen, double the quantity of rice, 50 kg, will be distributed.

Rain lashed several parts of Odisha, including the state's capital Bhubaneswar, on Wednesday as severe cyclone 'Montha' weakened into a cyclonic storm and was moving through neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, IMD said. Several incidents of landslides, uprooting of trees, and damage to houses have been reported from various districts, an official at the Special Relief Commissioner’s office said. Light-to-moderate rain with wind speed ranging from 30 kmph to 40 kmph was recorded across the coastal belt, including Khurda, Cuttack, Puri, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts, in the state, the IMD bulletin said. The maximum of 105 mm rainfall has been recorded in Mayurbhanj district, followed by 93.5 mm in Balasore, 90 mm in Khurda and 74.4 mm in Chandbali, the bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Centre (IMD) said.

Andhra Pradesh district police on Wednesday early morning cleared traffic on National Highway 16 after a massive tree fell near the Nookalamma Thalli Arch and Indian Oil Petrol Bunk in Anakapalli town, causing heavy traffic congestion. Cyclone Montha Live: Heavy rain forecast for 12 Andhra districts on Wednesday
- The Andhra Pradesh Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has forecast heavy rainfall on Wednesday in several districts as the impact of Cyclone Montha continues.
- According to the latest advisory, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Manyam, Alluri, Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli, Eluru, Krishna, NTR, Guntur, Bapatla, and Palnadu districts are likely to experience heavy rain in isolated areas.

To maintain uninterrupted communication during 'Montha,' the Andhra Pradesh administration has set up 81 wireless towers and 21 large lamps across critical zones.
For rescue and restoration operations, authorities have deployed 1,447 earthmovers, 321 drones, and 1,040 chainsaws to help clear fallen trees and restore connectivity, reorted PTI.
As part of its preparedness measures, the government has also sent out 3.6 crore alert messages to residents and stocked 865 tonnes of animal fodder for livestock in cyclone-affected regions.

However, emergency medical services will remain exempt from these restrictions.

Cyclone Montha Live: Nellore sees heaviest rain; Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam lashed
During a review meeting, officials briefed chief minister Chandrababu Naidu that Nellore district has so far received the heaviest rainfall due to Cyclone Montha. Between 8.30 am and 4 pm, Ulavapadu recorded 12.6 cm, followed by Kavali (12.2 cm), Dagadarthi (12 cm), Singarayakonda (10.5 cm), B Kodur (6 cm), while Visakhapatnam and Tuni received 2 cm each.
Heavy showers have also been reported in Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, and Anakapalli districts in the past few hours.
“It is estimated that the cyclone could cross the coast by 11.30 pm,” the CMO said, as quoted by PTI, cautioning that intense rainfall is likely between 9 pm and early Wednesday.

As Cyclone Montha approaches landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast, the state government has intensified relief and evacuation efforts across 22 districts, activating emergency measures and deploying disaster response teams.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the cyclone is likely to affect 403 mandals, prompting the setup of 488 control rooms at the mandal level. Nearly 76,000 residents have been evacuated to relief camps, and 219 medical camps have been set up to provide emergency aid.

Cyclone Montha Live: 1.38 lakh hectares of horticulture crops, 38,000 hectares of farmland damaged in Andhra
The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said that the cyclone has damaged standing crops over 38,000 hectares and horticulture crops across 1.38 lakh hectares in various parts of the state.
The severe cyclonic storm, expected to make landfall south of Kakinada tonight, has affected large areas across coastal and adjoining districts.
“Due to the impact of the cyclone, heavy rains across the state destroyed standing crops in 38,000 hectares and horticulture crops in 1.38 lakh hectares,” the CMO said in a statement, as quoted by PTI.

South Central Railway CPRO A Sridhar said, “Due to the cyclonic conditions prevailing along the coastal areas, Indian Railways has so far cancelled 122 trains, while a few others have been regulated, rescheduled, or diverted. In total, around 160 trains have been affected."
"Most of these trains operate between the Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada sections, which are likely to experience the impact of the cyclone. Therefore, services on those routes have been cancelled. Particularly, trains starting from south Indian cities such as Bengaluru and Chennai towards Howrah and Assam, as well as some trains bound for Secunderabad, have either been cancelled or rescheduled. Overall, 122 trains were cancelled, around 29 rescheduled, and eight diverted," he added.

The cyclone, moving north-northwestwards at 15 kmph, was centred at 4:30 PM IST on October 28, 2025, over the west-central Bay of Bengal, near latitude 15.8°N and longitude 82.4°E — about 50 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, 130 km south of Kakinada, and 230 km south-southwest of Visakhapatnam.

Several trains originating from Shalimar, Howrah, and Santragachi have been rescheduled due to the impact of Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS) Montha.
According to South Eastern Railway, the following trains have been delayed on October 28 and 29, 2025:
- 18045 Shalimar–Charlapalli East Coast Express will now depart Shalimar at 21:15 hrs on October 28, instead of 11:15 hrs.
- 22825 Shalimar–MGR Chennai Express will now depart Shalimar at 22:10 hrs on October 28, instead of 12:10 hrs.
- 22887 Howrah–SMVT Bengaluru Express will now depart Howrah at 22:30 hrs on October 28, instead of 12:30 hrs.
- 12841 Howrah–MGR Chennai Coromandal Express will now depart Howrah at 01:10 hrs on October 29, instead of 15:10 hrs on October 28.

Union minister Ashwini Vaishnawreviewed the railway’s preparedness for Cyclone Montha, which is expected to impact the coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Telangana.
According to an official note, Vaishnaw directed the concerned railway zones to take all precautionary measures in anticipation of the cyclone’s effect along India’s east coast, reported PTI.

- The Deputy Director of the Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre (IMD) said that Cyclone Montha is expected to make landfall along the Kakinada coast.

As per the weather department, the Severe Cyclonic Storm "Montha" over coastal Andhra Pradesh moved nearly northwestwards with a speed of 10 kmph during past six hours, weakened into a Cyclonic Storm and lay centered at 0230 hrs IST of today, the 29th October 2025, near latitude 16.5°N & longitude 81.5°E, about 20 km west-northwest of Narsapur (Andhra Pradesh), 50 km northeast of Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 90 km west-southwest of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), 230 km southwest of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and 470 km southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha).
"It is likely to move nearly northwestwards across coastal Andhra Pradesh and maintain its intensity of cyclonic storm during the next 6 hours, and weaken further into a deep depression during the subsequent 6 hours," IMD added. The latest observations indicate that the rear sector of the cyclonic storm "Montha" entered into the land.
