Cyclone Montha Live Updates: Andhra Pradesh death toll rises to 2 as cyclonic storm weakens; heavy rain in Bengal, Odisha, Telangana, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday announced that Cyclone Montha has weakened into a cyclonic storm over coastal Andhra Pradesh and is expected to maintain its current intensity for the next six hours.

According to IMD, the Severe Cyclonic Storm Montha moved northwestwards at a speed of around 10 kmph over the past six hours before weakening into a cyclonic storm. As of 2:30 am (IST) on October 29, 2025, the system was centered near latitude 16.5°N and longitude 81.5°E, approximately 20 km west-northwest of Narsapur, 50 km northeast of Machilipatnam, 90 km west-southwest of Kakinada, 230 km southwest of Visakhapatnam, and 470 km southwest of Gopalpur in Odisha. The IMD said Montha is likely to continue moving northwestward across coastal Andhra Pradesh, maintaining its cyclonic strength for another six hours before weakening into a deep depression later. Latest observations also indicate that the rear section of the storm has made landfall, marking the gradual weakening phase of the system.

Cyclone Montha live: Odisha, Tamil Nadu brace for heavy rain and strong winds

While Andhra Pradesh will bear the brunt of the storm, with red and orange alerts issued for 23 districts, the south-coastal districts of neighbouring Odisha are likely to witness heavy rainfall and strong winds. The northern districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, are expected to receive heavy rains.

Cyclone Montha to intensify into severe storm by Oct 28 morning

Cyclonic Storm ‘Montha’ is expected to strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm by the morning of October 28, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The storm is likely to move north-northwestwards and cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, during the evening or night of October 28, reported ANI.

At the time of landfall, Montha is expected to bring maximum sustained wind speeds of 90–100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph, the IMD said.

‘Zero casualty our goal’: Odisha minister says state prepared as Cyclone Montha approaches

"The state government is well prepared to face the eventuality, and arrangements have been made in the possible impact areas. The administration will complete the process of evacuation of people from vulnerable places by 5 pm on Monday," the minister said.
Though the cyclone will cross the Andhra Pradesh Coast, it will have an impact on Odisha's southern and coastal regions, for which the state government has made all arrangements to save men and animals with a goal of 'zero casualty', Pujari said.
The minister said that 'red warning' (take action), predicting extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds (gusting up to 80 kmph), was issued for Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal and Kalahandi districts.

The Odisha government on Monday began evacuating people from vulnerable areas and deployed 128 disaster response teams across eight southern districts after the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclonic storm named ‘Montha’. Odisha minister Suresh Pujari said evacuations were underway in low-lying and hilly regions of the eight southern districts likely to be affected by the approaching cyclone.

The Andhra Pradesh government has prepared an action plan for relief and essential supplies in precyclone preparedness for Cyclone Montha.
According to the Meteorological Department, the deep depression over southeast Bay of Bengal is very likely to cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada on October 28 evening. It is located about 780 km east-southeast of Chennai, 830 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam, 830 km southeast of Kakinada, 930 km southsoutheast of Gopalpur, said the Met Department.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday said that cyclone Montha has weakened into a Cyclonic Storm over the coastal Andhra Pradesh and will maintain the intensity of cyclonic storm during the next six hours.

As per the weather department, the Severe Cyclonic Storm "Montha" over coastal Andhra Pradesh moved nearly northwestwards with a speed of 10 kmph during past six hours, weakened into a Cyclonic Storm and lay centered at 0230 hrs IST of today, the 29th October 2025, near latitude 16.5°N & longitude 81.5°E, about 20 km west-northwest of Narsapur (Andhra Pradesh), 50 km northeast of Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 90 km west-southwest of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), 230 km southwest of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and 470 km southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha).

"It is likely to move nearly northwestwards across coastal Andhra Pradesh and maintain its intensity of cyclonic storm during the next 6 hours, and weaken further into a deep depression during the subsequent 6 hours," IMD added. The latest observations indicate that the rear sector of the cyclonic storm "Montha" entered into the land.
