Congress candidate
Ramesh Pisharody scripted a dramatic victory for the party in the Palakkad assembly constituency, amid a tough challenge from BJP and several controversies during the campaign.
Pisharody was fielded at a time when the party was under pressure following a sexual misconduct allegation against outgoing MLA Rahul Mamkootathil, which had triggered widespread public debate. On the other hand, BJP had strengthened its foothold in the region after retaining power in the Palakkad municipality, putting UDF on the defensive.
Despite being mocked as 'a comedian', Pisharody turned the narrative around with a focused and energetic campaign, connecting directly with voters.
The result was decisive. He defeated BJP candidate Sobha Surendran by 13,147 votes in a high-stakes triangular contest. The contest had intensified just before polling, after allegations surfaced that BJP workers attempted to buy votes. A video shared by Congress workers went viral, adding to the drama in the final hours.
Reacting to his victory, Pisharody struck an emotional note in a Facebook post: "Kerala's great victory now includes Palakkad. I thank the voters for placing their trust in me. My heartfelt gratitude to UDF leadership, party workers who stood with me, and everyone who prayed for my success."
A political newcomer, Pisharody's first electoral battle has now turned into a breakthrough win, marking a significant moment for Congress in Palakkad. TNN
