For Abhisek Roy, his design at Roy Calcutta, begins with memory. Rooted in Santiniketan sensibilities, he reimagines Bengali aesthetics into modern silhouettes using tussar, jamdani, and mulmul – creating pieces that feel powerful. His work, now earning global attention, positions him as a changemaker in contemporary fashion.
A brand born from lived experienceMy journey as a designer has been deeply personal—guided by memory, material, and meaning. It has never been about chasing trends, but about translating lived experience into something that feels both grounded and global. I am not interested in recreating the past; I want to carry its sensibility forward with relevance and quiet confidence. At the core of my work is Kolkata – a city that acts as a silent collaborator. Its layered contradictions, from intellectual rigor to emotional warmth, shape how I think about form, texture, and storytelling. These influences emerge organically in silhouettes and details that reveal themselves slowly.
Inspiration through subtletyCalcutta inspires through nuance rather than spectacle. Its aesthetic is built on depth, restraint, and authenticity.
From time-worn architecture and handloom traditions to everyday cultural discourse, the city offers a richness that does not demand attention, yet leaves a lasting impression. This translates into pieces that prioritise craftsmanship, proportion, and longevity—designs that age gracefully and gain character over time.
The Kolkata style mantraThe city’s style is idea-led, confident without excess, and rooted in tradition without becoming costume. This understated sophistication travels effortlessly—resonating beyond geography with a global audience that values meaning over momentary fashion. Through Roy Calcutta, I aim to create intentional, thoughtful, and enduring designs. Retaining Calcutta in the brand name is deliberate. To me, it represents a worldview defined by artistic rebellion, intellectual courage, and cultural confidence. It is not just a place, but a philosophy. The name signals provenance and perspective, anchoring the brand in a narrative that is rooted and universally relevant.
True style lies not in loud expression, but in thoughtful storytelling. Where a city is not just referenced, but worn :
