Céline Dion's battle with stiff person syndrome to be explored in her documentary

Céline Dion, with a career spanning over 40 years and over 250 million albums sold, has left an indelible mark on the music industry. A forthcoming documentary, ‘I Am: Céline Dion,’ aims to shed light on stiff person syndrome, a neurological disorder that the globally acclaimed singer has been diagnosed with. The project will be providing a closer look into a year in Dion's life as she navigates the challenges posed by this condition affecting her spinal cord and brain.

Expressing the difficulties she has faced in recent years, Dion stated that the journey from discovering her condition to learning how to live with and manage it hasn’t been easy. However, she didn’t let it define her. She said she decided to document this part of her life to help others who share this diagnosis, hoping that the documentary will bring awareness to this lesser-known condition.



Dion publicly revealed her battle with stiff person syndrome in December 2022 via an Instagram video, where she detailed the impact of spasms on her daily life. The condition has led to the cancellation of all her future tour dates since May 2023, preventing her from performing.

In December 2023, Dion's sister shared that the singer lost control over her muscles, but remained determined to return to the stage. Stiff person syndrome, a rare autoimmune neurological disorder, causes progressive muscle stiffness and painful spasms in the lower back, legs, and torso, affecting an estimated one to two people in a million.


The documentary is crafted by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Irene Taylor, known for her work on the sex abuse documentary ‘Leave No Trace: A Hidden History of the Boy Scouts’ and ‘Trees and Other Entanglements. While the release date for the documentary is yet to be announced, ‘I Am: Céline Dion’ promises an emotional and illuminating exploration of the legendary singer's journey.
