'The Devil Wears Prada 2' has no shortage of star power, but if there is one extended appearance that has risen above all the glamorous cameos in the film, it is
Lady Gaga playing herself. According to
Meryl Streep, working with her was nothing short of extraordinary.
In an interview with PEOPLE alongside returning costars Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt, Streep, 76, summed up her experience with the pop star in just one word: "Divine."
Meryl Streep on what it was like working with Lady Gaga
The three-time Oscar winner did not stop at one word. "She's hilarious, game, and ready to improvise endlessly," Streep said of Gaga, 40, who also contributed three songs to the film's soundtrack. "She's an amazing, amazing musician and an artist of the first caliber. Great actress." She added simply, "I loved working with her."
In the film, Gaga plays a no-nonsense version of herself who has a clear issue with Streep's iconic character Miranda Priestly. Their scene together, set at Milan Fashion Week, sees Gaga facing off with Priestly just before an Italian fashion show performance. After Priestly walks away, Gaga's character turns to her hair and makeup team and hisses, "Who let her in here?"
Anne Hathaway's sweet words for Lady Gaga
Hathaway, 43, was equally effusive in her praise. "I want to mention one other thing about her that I was really delighted by," she said. "I'm so touched at how humble she is. Just really sweet to everyone, very soft-spoken. She cared so much, and there was zero attitude. There was zero like, 'You get three takes, and then I'm out.' She was on, I think, a world tour at the time!"
"She was just gorgeous in every way a person can be," Hathaway concluded.
It was Meryl Streep who made the call to Lady Gaga
As it turns out, fans have Streep to thank for Gaga's appearance in the film entirely. During a recent appearance on Heart Breakfast, Streep revealed that she personally called the singer to ask her to take part, much to the surprise of her costars.
"That was me. Thank you. You're welcome," she told a shocked Blunt. "I just said, 'Would you do this? Because it's going to be really good.' And she said, 'Yeah!' " Streep said, snapping her fingers. "Just like that. She's on her world tour, which lasted a year, playing to 75,000 people in a stadium, and just flew off and did us."
'The Devil Wears Prada 2' is now showing in theatres.
