Adam Melchor recalls childhood bond with Michael B. Jordan after Oscar win: ‘He took me under his wing’
When Michael B. Jordan took home the Oscar in 2026, the world cheered for a Hollywood icon hitting a new high. But quietly, another story was making its way around, a story that peeled back the layers and showed the Michael people don’t always see.
Indie musician Adam Melchor stepped forward, sharing memories from way back when they were just kids. Before the fame, before the blockbuster movies, Michael was just a teenager in Newark who looked out for the younger kids.
"So, during the summer, I would go with him to work," Melchor shared about his childhood summers spent at the magnet school. The ‘Real Estate’ singer remembered meeting Michael there in the summer of 2001: just another student, but one who stood out. Michael didn’t just brush the little kid off. He actually hung out with Adam, shot hoops with him, and just made him feel seen. He "sort of took me under his wing," Melchor said. "He would play basketball with me, and we would walk around, and it really meant a lot to me."
When that summer ended, Adam was crushed: "So, at the end of the summer, I was super upset I was never going to see him again."
He thought he’d never see Michael again.
But Adam revealed that his dad promised they’d go see Michael’s new movie that fall. Turns out, that “one kid” who made time for him was about to step onto a much bigger stage.
Years later, at the height of Oscar buzz, Adam posted a video about those summers. He joked about being the “corny kid,” a nod to a running joke from Jordan’s past, and then closed with a simple invite: "So A., congratulations to Michael B. Jordan, B., be careful who you make fun of in high school, and C. If you’re ever around Michael and you’re seeing this, I’m so down to play basketball again."
During his speech, Michael spoke straight from the heart. He thanked the Black actors who paved the way, his family, his collaborators, and everyone who helped him get there. “I stand here because of the people that came before me,” he said.
He’s put out EPs and albums that dive into love, figuring out who you are, and just being vulnerable.Get the latest entertainment updates from the Times of India, along with the latest Hindi movies, upcoming Hindi movies in 2026 , and Telugu movies.”

In a recently posted Instagram video, Adam Melchor revealed that his dad worked as the vice principal at Newark Arts High School, and that meant Adam spent a lot of his childhood summers wandering the halls while his dad worked year-round. Melchor recalled that his father would work "12 months out of the year" despite the usual "normal teachers [who] work 10 months out of the year.""So, during the summer, I would go with him to work," Melchor shared about his childhood summers spent at the magnet school.
