Singers turned actors

Music has long opened the door to screen careers, and some stars made that switch with ease. As Vogue noted, several performers first built fame through songs, bands, or talent shows before landing acting roles. This lineup includes Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, Jennifer Hudson, Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Justin Timberlake. Each one entered film or television from a music background, then built screen credits that broadened their image. Some won major awards. Others landed breakout parts in studio films. Together, they show how stage presence, timing, and star power can move beyond the recording booth and thrive on screen in surprising ways. Here we are compiling a list of singers who also tried their hands on acting.

2/7

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga had screen credits before 'A Star Is Born' turned her acting career into a major talking point. She appeared, uncredited, on 'The Sopranos' in 2001 when she was 15. After becoming a global pop star, she returned to acting with 'Sin City: A Dame to Kill For' in 2014. She then joined Ryan Murphy’s 'American Horror Story' anthology and won a Golden Globe for playing the Countess in 'American Horror Story: Hotel.' Her next major film at the time was Ridley Scott’s 'House of Gucci,' showing that her acting career had already built strong momentum beyond music.

3/7

Harry Styles

Harry Styles moved from boy band fame to the big screen with a high-profile first film role. The former One Direction star made his movie debut in Christopher Nolan’s World War II drama 'Dunkirk' in 2017. That project gave Styles a serious entry point into acting and showed audiences a different side of his career. He also lined up more film work with 'My Policeman' alongside Emma Corrin and Olivia Wilde’s 'Don’t Worry, Darling' with Florence Pugh. His move from pop idol to actor quickly became one of the most closely watched transitions in entertainment and showed he was serious about screen work.

4/7

Rihanna

Rihanna’s first film appearance tied closely to her music career. She appeared as herself in 2006’s 'Bring It On: All or Nothing.' From there, she expanded into broader acting work and took on a mix of parts. She played petty officer Cora Raikes in 2012’s 'Battleship,' a Moon Goddess in 2014’s 'Annie,' and Marion Crane in the television series 'Bates Motel.' She also appeared as a lounge singer in 2017’s 'Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets' and as hacker Nine Ball in 2018’s 'Ocean’s Eight.' Later, she appeared with Donald Glover in the 2019 film 'Guava Island.'

5/7

Beyoncé

Beyoncé entered movies after already becoming a major force with Destiny’s Child. Her first major motion picture, aside from MTV’s made-for-TV 'Carmen: A Hip Hopera,' was 2002’s 'Austin Powers in Goldmember,' where she played a parody of a blaxploitation character. She followed that with 'The Fighting Temptations' in 2003 and 'The Pink Panther' in 2006. That same year, she landed one of the lead roles in the Oscar-winning 'Dreamgirls.' She later added more screen work with 'Cadillac Records,' 'Obsessed,' and her voice role in Jon Favreau’s 2019 version of 'The Lion King,' showing clear range across different kinds of projects.

6/7

Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson made a strong leap from music to film. Just two years after she placed seventh on 'American Idol,' Hudson won an Oscar for playing Effie in 2006’s 'Dreamgirls.' That role instantly established her as a major screen performer, not only a singer with star power. She also earned major attention for leading the biopic 'Respect,' a project made even more meaningful because Aretha Franklin personally chose her for the role. Her acting story stands out because it moved quickly from reality television and music success to Academy Award recognition, giving her one of the strongest crossover careers among singers-turned-actors.

7/7

Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake started on 'The Mickey Mouse Club,' but his acting career truly gained traction after his boy band years began to fade. He built screen visibility through guest turns on 'Saturday Night Live,' which earned him two Emmy wins. From there, Timberlake added a string of notable film roles, including 'The Social Network,' 'Bad Teacher,' 'Friends With Benefits,' 'Alpha Dog,' and 'Inside Llewyn Davis.' He also balanced acting with a busy music career, releasing five studio albums, two compilation albums, and 39 singles, 18 of which were released as a featured artist, proving he could sustain both careers at once.
