Diplomats, food lovers gather for ‘Kolkata Sushi Quest’ at Japanese Consul General’s Residence
Kolkata’s growing appetite for global cuisines found a fitting celebration on Friday evening as the Consul General of Japan in Kolkata, Yoshihisa Ishikawa, and Cherry Ishikawa hosted Kolkata Sushi Quest: Discover Premium Ingredients, an exclusive event showcasing authentic Japanese cuisine and culinary traditions.
Held at the Consul General’s residence and organised in collaboration with MainDish.in, the gathering brought together members of the diplomatic community, food influencers, culinary enthusiasts and guests from diverse professional backgrounds for an immersive experience centred on Japanese food culture.
The evening highlighted the increasing availability of authentic Japanese ingredients in India through a specially curated menu prepared by chef Rohit Tamang. Guests were served a range of traditional dishes, including chawanmushi, hijiki, potato salad, tofu ginger and rice paper rolls, followed by grilled mackerel, yakitori, nigiri sushi with miso soup, and matcha mousse for dessert.
A key attraction of the event was a live sushi-making demonstration conducted by Deputy Consul General Katsunori Ashida and his wife, Mizuho Ashida. A certified sushi chef, Ashida guided guests through the intricate process of preparing sushi, showcasing the precision, craftsmanship and attention to detail that define one of Japan’s most celebrated culinary traditions. Using premium imported ingredients supplied by MainDish.in, the demonstration offered attendees a rare opportunity to witness authentic sushi preparation firsthand.
Beyond the food, the gathering served as a platform for cultural exchange, with guests engaging in conversations about Japanese traditions, gastronomy and the shared role of food in fostering understanding between communities. Speaking about the event, Consul general of Japan in Kolkata, Yposhihisa Ishikawa said, "Food is one of the most effective ways to connect people across cultures. We are delighted to see Japanese cuisine becoming increasingly popular in Kolkata, with more restaurants, home cooks and food enthusiasts exploring authentic Japanese flavours. The availability of quality Japanese ingredients in the city is opening new possibilities for culinary exchange and strengthening the friendship between Japan and India."
