Kolkata Metro joins hands with IIT Madras for LIM-based rail technology research
Metro Railway, Kolkata has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Institute of Technology Madras to jointly pursue research and development on Linear Induction Motor (LIM)-based propulsion systems for Metro rail operations. The partnership aims to evaluate the technical viability, operational efficiency and long-term cost implications of deploying LIM technology in Indian Metro networks. As part of the collaboration, a pilot project is being planned in which a Metro motor coach will be retrofitted to enable field testing and collection of operational data. The study will further explore the effectiveness of LIM systems in challenging corridor conditions such as sharper curves and steeper gradients. The initiative is expected to enhance indigenous expertise in next-generation urban rail technologies while encouraging innovation-led growth in the Metro sector. Findings from the project are likely to aid future decision-making on the adoption of alternative propulsion technologies for upcoming Metro rail projects in India.
