Actors who started with small roles

Many of Bollywood’s biggest stars began their journeys with humble, often unnoticed roles. Not everyone starts out big on a silver screen and these actors prove that even the smallest beginnings can pave the way for the most celebrated careers. Here's a list of 5 actors who started with small roles.

Rajkummar Rao in 'Love Sex Aur Dhokha'

Rajkumar Rao made his debut in Bollywood with Dibakar Banerjee’s Love Sex Aur Dhokha. He played the role of Adarsh, a supermarket salesman who manipulates his coworker into being with him and later secretly records her to blackmail her. Albeit being a small role, it portrayed his ability to play complex characters and paved the way for his successful career in Bollywood. Today, he is a National-Award winning actor, celebrated for his roles in Newton and Stree.

Kalki Koechlin in 'Dev.D'

In this movie, Kalki played the role of a supporting character, Leni, also known as Chanda, a bright and carefree teenage girl whose life takes a turn for the worse as an intimate video goes viral in her school. The public humiliation and fallout lead her to the life of a sex worker. Her nuanced performance earned her critical acclaim and opened the doors for more opportunities in Bollywood.

Shraddha Kapoor in 'Teen Patti'

Shraddha made her Bollywood debut in a small role in the movie Teen Patti, alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Ben Kingsley. She played the role of Aparna, a young college student who gets caught up in her mathematics professor, played by Amitabh Bachchan’s gambling scheme. Even though it was a minor role, it showed her potential for the upcoming projects. The film served as a stepping stone for her breakthrough later in Aashiqui 2.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui in 'Sarfarosh'

Nawazuddin Siddiqui played the part of a terrorist informant in this action thriller movie. He was a part of an interrogation scene where ACP Ajay Rathod, played by Aamir Khan, was questioning him about the illegal arms smuggling that is linked to cross-border terrorism. His character provided a small piece of information to the police, contributing to the broader investigation. Although the role was brief, Nawazuddin's nervous and convincing portrayal of the informant added authenticity to the scene. The role marked his debut and is often revisited as a reminder of his humble beginnings.
