A record-breaking release

The film transformed the Bollywood box office forever, opening on December 10, 1982. Though made with a relatively modest budget of ₹2 crore, 'Disco Dancer' would eventually become India's first movie to earn ₹100 crores - a record set for 12 years. It came up with a original concept that brought music and dance with drama, connecting with the audience in India.

2/5

Mithun Chakraborty’s breakthrough role

The film launched Mithun Chakraborty to superstardom. He portrayed a young street hustler from the slums of Bombay whose rise from poverty relatable and touched the hearts of people. His fancy dance moves and his handsome clothing and his engaging acting made him a household name throughout India and even further.

3/5

Music that defined an era

The film's dance tracks created by Bappi Lahiri and written by Anjaan and Faruk Kaiser, became disco hits in no time at all. "I Am a Disco Dancer" and "Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Aaja," along with others of their ilk, created a global disco craze that was felt everywhere from the Soviet Union to small towns in India.

4/5

A film that changed Bollywood’s narrative

Disco Dancer, directed by Babbar Subhash and written by Rahi Masoom Raza, broke the mold of the "angry young man," which had occupied most of Bollywood during the 70's and 80's. Rather than using violence to defeat the villains, Chakraborty's character defeats them through disco dancing. This campaign initiated an avalanche of music-oriented filmmaking and extended potential representations of mainstream Bollywood narratives.

5/5

Global influence and remakes

Disco Dancer's successes were also not solely domestic, as it also became an international phenomenon. This phenomenon informed and inspired the making of Tamil and Telugu remakes titled, Paadum Vaanampadi, and Disco King, respectively. What is also true, is that Mithun Chakroborty's work in Disco Dancer is still an iconic moment for chachis, who expect this performance to replicate the exact thing in any further disco-themed content in Indian Films.
