From Prithviraj Kapoor to Ranbir Kapoor: A look back at the first films of this Bollywood family

The Kapoors are widely known as the first family of Indian cinema. Spanning five generations, their contributions have shaped the heart and soul of Bollywood. From silent films to modern-day blockbusters each Kapoor has left an indelible mark. Here’s a look at where it all began, the debut films that introduced these icons to the silver screen and laid the foundation of an extraordinary cinematic legacy.

The patriarch of the Kapoor clan, Prithviraj Kapoor made his film debut in the silent film 'Be Dhari Talwar' in 1929. A pioneer of Indian theatre and cinema where he later gained fame with talkies like 'Alam Ara' and 'Sikandar.' His entry marked the beginning of the Kapoor dynasty’s relationship with the big screen and legacy still celebrated today.

Although Raj Kapoor appeared as a child in 'Inquilab' (1935) but his official debut as a lead came with 'Aag' (1948) which he also co-directed and produced under the RK Films banner. The film marked the birth of the “Showman of Indian Cinema” and began a legendary journey filled with iconic roles, soulful music and cinematic innovation.

Shammi Kapoor entered the film industry with 'Jeewan Jyoti' in 1953. While the film didn’t make a huge splash but Shammi later carved a niche with his energetic performances and rock-and-roll charm. Known for his unique style and charisma, he went on to become one of the most entertaining heroes of the 60s and 70s.

Shashi Kapoor began his acting career as a child artist in 'Aag 'and 'Awara,' but his debut as a leading man came with 'Dharmputra' in 1961. His boyish charm and dignified screen presence won hearts, and he later became a global face of Indian cinema through his work in both Bollywood and international films.

Randhir Kapoor started off as a child artist in films like 'Shree 420' and'Do Ustad,' but his big break came in 1971 with 'Kal Aaj Aur Kal.' The film was special, and it brought together three generations: Prithviraj, Raj, and Randhir himself. He also directed the movie, marking a dynamic debut behind and in front of the camera.

Rishi Kapoor first appeared as the younger version of Raj Kapoor in 'Mera Naam Joker.' His performance earned him a National Award as a child actor. Though technically a child debut, it was a turning point. His lead debut came with 'Bobby' (1973), which made him an overnight star and cemented his place in romantic cinema.

Breaking the family tradition of only male stars, Karisma Kapoor became the first Kapoor woman to enter mainstream cinema. She made her debut at age 17 with 'Prem Qaidi' in 1991. Though the film was modest, Karisma went on to become one of the biggest heroines of the ’90s known for her versatility and on-screen energy.

Kareena Kapoor entered the industry with 'Refugee' opposite Abhishek Bachchan in 2000. Her natural screen presence and expressive eyes were praised from the start. While the film had a modest run but Kareena quickly rose to fame with hits like 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' and today she remains one of Bollywood’s most bankable and stylish stars.

Ranbir Kapoor made his much-awaited debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 'Saawariya' in 2007. Though the film underperformed but his charm, acting chops, and dance moves didn’t go unnoticed. Ranbir has since become one of India’s finest actors, delivering acclaimed performances in films like 'Rockstar,' 'Barfi!' and 'Animal.'
