Meet Dimple Kapadia

Bollywood is full of inspiring stories about its stars, but few are as striking as that of Dimple Kapadia. Her life reads like a gripping novel, complete with youthful love, early fame, heartbreak, and a triumphant return to the silver screen. From marrying a superstar at 16 to becoming a mother at 17, separating from her husband at 25, and later acting alongside legends like Rishi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, and Sunny Deol, Dimple Kapadia’s story is nothing short of remarkable. She even went on to work in Hollywood, breaking many barriers along the way.

2/7

Early fame and blockbuster beginnings

Dimple Kapadia’s life took a fascinating turn at a very young age. Born to Gujarati industrialist Chunnibhai Kapadia and his wife Betty, she stepped into the world of glamour almost effortlessly. In 1973, legendary filmmaker Raj Kapoor cast her in his film ‘Bobby’ opposite his son Rishi Kapoor. The film turned out to be a blockbuster, cementing her place in Bollywood almost overnight. As noted in multiple reports, Dimple was only 14 when she began getting noticed in the industry, achieving a level of fame that most struggle for years to reach.

A fairytale marriage that didn’t last

Before ‘Bobby’ even released, Dimple’s personal life took a dramatic turn. She fell in love with Bollywood’s first superstar, Rajesh Khanna, and married him at the young age of 16. This was a dream wedding by every standard, capturing the attention of fans across the country. However, soon after getting married, she stepped away from the film industry to focus on her new life as a wife. Over time, the couple’s relationship began to strain. Many stories from that period suggested that the age gap and Rajesh Khanna’s strong wish to have a son may have created distance between them.

Becoming a mother while still a teenager

By the age of 17, Dimple became a mother to her first daughter, Twinkle Khanna. Later, she had another daughter, Rinke Khanna. During this time, she chose to dedicate herself entirely to her family and stayed away from films for about 12 years. In those days, it was common for actresses to step back from their careers after marriage and motherhood, while male actors continued to enjoy leading roles without any such pause.

Stepping back into Bollywood with ‘Sagar’

After spending over a decade away from the screen, Dimple made a striking return to films with ‘Sagar’ in 1985. The film, which once again paired her with Rishi Kapoor, not only revived her career but also earned her widespread appreciation. This comeback proved that her talent remained as powerful as ever. In the years that followed, she acted in many successful films, sharing the screen with major stars like Amitabh Bachchan and Sunny Deol. Her performance in ‘Rudaali’ won her a National Award in 1993, firmly re-establishing her as one of Bollywood’s finest actresses.

When Dimple spoke about her comeback

In a chat with Rediff, Dimple Kapadia shared how she returned to films after marriage and having two kids with the film 'Saagar'. She said, "I made a comeback when married with two children in the film Saagar. It is not the audience who rejects us; it is the people in the industry who believe that once you are married you are not desirable to the audience. I think I proved them wrong."

She added that if people like your work and how you look, they’ll watch you, married or not. Dimple also pointed out, "We had Nutanji and Sharmilaji working before me who were married and had kids." Even male stars once hid their weddings fearing it would hurt their popularity.

Winning global recognition

Dimple Kapadia didn’t just limit her career to Bollywood. In 2006, she appeared in the English-language film ‘Leela’, which highlighted her ability to handle diverse roles across different languages. Years later, she surprised international audiences by starring in Christopher Nolan’s Hollywood blockbuster ‘Tenet’ in 2020, earning global praise for her performance.

In recent years, she has continued to show her range by working in a variety of films and web series, including ‘Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo’, ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar’, ‘Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’, ‘Pathaan’, and ‘Murder Mubarak’.
