Not the stars you know: Sholay’s iconic roles were first offered to these unexpected superstars

Before Amjad Khan made Gabbar Singh one of the most terrifying villains in Indian cinema, the role was actually offered to Danny Denzongpa. However, due to scheduling conflicts—he was already committed to Dharmatma, being shot in Afghanistan—Danny had to let go of the opportunity. His unavailability opened the door for a relatively unknown actor, Amjad Khan, to step in and create history.

When Amjad Khan was finalized for Gabbar Singh, the decision wasn’t met with full confidence. The screenwriters, Salim-Javed, reportedly had doubts about whether Amjad’s voice was commanding enough for the fearsome dacoit. But after preparing extensively—studying real-life dacoits and perfecting his menacing tone—Amjad silenced all doubts and gave Bollywood one of its most iconic villains.

Believe it or not, Amitabh Bachchan, who played the brooding Jai in Sholay, was deeply interested in playing Gabbar Singh. He was reportedly fascinated by the character’s intensity and even requested the role. However, the makers felt he was better suited to the hero’s part, and the rest, as they say, is history.

The stoic, revenge-driven character of Thakur Baldev Singh was first offered to legendary actor Dilip Kumar. However, he turned it down, reportedly because he felt the character lacked emotional range. Years later, he admitted that refusing the part was a missed opportunity, especially after seeing how powerfully the role was executed in the final film.

When Sanjeev Kumar was approached for Sholay, he initially expressed a strong interest in playing Gabbar Singh. However, the filmmakers felt his gentle and dignified screen presence made him a better fit for Thakur. He accepted the role and went on to deliver a performance remembered for its quiet strength and emotional depth.
