Married at just 16
Dimple Kapadia was just 16 when she married Bollywood's first superstar, Rajesh Khanna, in March 1973. She had just made the sensational debut that would, after the wedding, take her into excellence, with Bobby (1973). The wedding shocked the film industry, as she was regarded as a rising star of her generation; a true triumph.
Became a mother at 17
Soon after marriage, Dimple became a mother for the first time at age 17 with her first daughter, Twinkle Khanna. Years later she had her second daughter, Rinke Khanna. Though young, she accepted the role of mother, very much removed from the business of making films and taking care of it as a daily family commitment.
Gave up her career
After marrying Rajesh Khanna, Dimple stepped away from acting, even though Bobby had catapulted her to instant celebrity—I had not witnessed such a choice before. It was a bold choice, particularly in the context of her trajectory within the industry. Her departure became one that was talked about, and at times, even questioned.
Separated at 25
By 25, Dimple and Rajesh Khanna separated and chose not to divorce. Their relationship, according to the tabloids, grew strained due to Rajesh's personal difficulties. The situation got worse due to the pressures associated with both actors being stars. However, she continued to be present for him during his final days.
A powerful comeback to films
Given that Dimple stepped away from the screen for almost ten years, her decision to return was courageous. In Sagar (1985), she returned to film and swiftly re-established herself as a talented actress and glamorous leading lady. Dimple returned to Bollywood and had an illustrious second chance at the industry, appearing in won accolades for such films as 'Rudaali' and 'Lekin' and more recently 'Tenet' and 'Pathaan'.
