Suraiya reveals she declined Dev Anand's marriage proposal over a career condition; recalls having secret phone conversations with the actor every Friday

Last year, Suraiya enjoyed a brief yet outstanding career in cinema, with her whirlwind romance with actor Dev Anand becoming a widely discussed aspect of her life. Collaborating on seven films, including Vidya (1948), Jeet (1949), and Shair (1949), their on-screen chemistry captivated audiences. Despite Suraiya's deep affection for Dev Anand, she declined his marriage proposal for several reasons. Though their love story remains a notable chapter in Bollywood history, Suraiya's decision not to marry Dev Anand adds an intriguing dimension to their legendary bond.

In a revealing 1972 interview with Stardust magazine, Suraiya provided insights into her secret romance with Dev Anand. Amidst the watchful eyes of her strict grandmother, the couple found ways to keep their love from public scrutiny. Suraiya disclosed that, due to her grandmother's constant presence at film studios, they resorted to secret phone conversations every Friday, cherishing those moments of connection despite the challenges they faced in maintaining their relationship privately.

Suraiya, who passed away on January 31, 2004, said that every Friday of the week, he rang her up at night. The actress made sure to be hovering near the phone at the appointed time.

However, despite their deep affection, Suraiya declined Dev Anand's marriage proposal. The actor proposed a court marriage, emphasising his belief that "love is everything" and transcends religious boundaries. Aware of potential objections from her grandmother due to their inter-caste relationship, Dev assured Suraiya of his commitment to providing love, respect, and security, while expecting the same from her.

Anand's proposal came with the condition that Suraiya should give up her career post-marriage, which gave her pause. Suraiya, unwilling to sacrifice her successful career, found herself at a crossroads. Complicating matters, her grandmother's threat endangered her; she warned, "I’ll have you both arrested if you marry."

In a conversation with Stardust, Suraiya disclosed the various factors contributing to her decision to decline Dev Anand's proposal. While she acknowledged Dev's unwavering affection, her own uncertainty and confusion became paramount. Suraiya admitted to feeling unsure of herself and described Dev's reaction to her refusal, recounting his disappointment and labelling her as a coward. Reflecting on her choice, she pondered whether it was a folly, a mistake, or perhaps destiny influencing their paths.
