Bangaarada Manushya (1972)

Among all the many films that have perfectly utilized the "family" trope, S. Siddalingaiah's 'Bangaarada Manushya' stands out for myriad reasons. It firmly establishes the familial value in the Indian context, first, and then traverses an epic journey of a brother through an assured melodramatic style. Dr. Rajkumar, with the support of the vibrant principal cast, delivers a career-defining performance as the doting saviour of the family who comes in aid at the most of dire of times.

Daari Tappida Maga (1975)

Dr. Rajkumar featured in many films as the archetypal brother/family man but 'Daari Tappida Maga' is one film where he truly has fun with the gimmick. Playing a dual role in the film as the good/evil twin brothers who were separated at birth, he is both affable as the straight-cut college professor Prasad and also hilarious and fun as the crook brother Prakash. The movie is one of his many blockbusters during the '70s.

Excuse Me (2003)

Although the two main characters in 'Excuse Me' aren't related by blood in the story, their interpersonal dynamics do play out as in a genuine "brothers" story. With a triangular love story at the heart of it, director Prem explores a toxic and twisted bond between two brothers who feel for the same girl but with different moralities in place. It's an interesting take on the conventional best friends/brothers trope which leads to some genuine moments in the film.

Ganesha Subramanya (1991)

Anant Nag and Ramesh Bhat were in the thick of some of the most interesting action that took place through the '80s and '90s. They set themselves apart mainly by starring in comedy dramas and created a niche - especially Nag - for themselves. In Phani Ramachandra's 'Ganesha Subramanya', they play two brothers who are revolted by any female company, and in their pursuits to excel at their jobs, they encounter life-changing events that challenge their outlooks. What stands out is the camaraderie between the two male leads in the film.

Sahodarara Savaal (1977)

Two brothers who were separated very early on, only to let fates collide much later in their lives - this might be an age-old trope in cinema but 'Sahodarara Savaal' stands out for many reasons. From the fun action sequences to the interplay between Rajinikanth and Vishnuvardhan's characters, the film has entertainment written all over. This was also the peak of the "action entertainer" in Kannada cinema with commercial films increasingly featuring more physical action than ever before.
