P. Padmarajan's 31st Death Anniversary: Rare pictures of the legend

The day 24 January 1991, witnessed the loss of one of the maverick filmmakers in Malayalam cinema, P. Padmarajan. Making his debut through the film ‘Peruvazhiyambalam’, P. Padmarajan could be undoubtedly termed as an aced raconteur who ushered in a new wave of storytelling for the audience and several filmmakers who followed him. Several films such as ‘Oridathoru Phayalwan’, ‘Parannu Parannu Parannu’, ‘Season’, ‘Innale’, ‘Njan Gandharvan’, is a clear proof that P. Padmarajan aced at any genres that he worked in. Today marks the 31st death anniversary of the veteran filmmaker P. Padmarajan and here is a collection of his rare photos.

From the location of ‘Thoovanathumbikal’

Mohanlal- Padmarajan’s film ‘Thoovanathumbikal’ was one of the groundbreaking Malayalam movies that paved a new and unique style for executing romantic drama movies. The film was partly based on the novel ‘Udakappola’ and the story revolved around the character Jayakrishnan who gets into a romantic relationship with two women Radha and Clara. The film ‘Thoovanathumbikal’ had a battalion of actors that included Mohanlal, Sumalatha, Parvathy, Ashokan, Babu Namboothiri, and Jagathy Sreekumar.

Njan Gandharvan

‘Njan Gandharvan’, is yet another masterpiece from P. Padmarajan’s filmography and also the last film directed by the master filmmaker. The romantic- fantasy movie told the story of a young girl named Bhama’ who falls in love with a demigod who is visible only to her. The story has a tragic ending as the laws of nature don’t allow them to have a life together. The role of the demigod was played by Nitish Bharadwaj and Bhama was essayed by Suparna Anand.

Aparan

Actor Jayaram’s debut film ‘Aparan’ told the life of a youngster Viswanathan who gets trapped in a crisis situation as he happens to share a resemblance with a gangster. Although the gangster character is not shown in the film, his presence can be felt throughout the film. Kudos to the brilliant filmmaker P. Padmarajan for the magnificent execution style.

Films with Mammootty

P. Padmarajan has made several classic movies teaming up with the legendary actor Mammootty ranging from drama movies to mystery thrillers. ‘Koodevide’, ‘Thinkalaazhcha Nalla Divasam’, ‘Kariyilakkattu Pole’, ‘Arappatta Kettiya Graamathil’, ‘Nombarathi Poovu’ are some of the classic films that were made by Padmarajan by joining hands with Mammootty.

Films with Mohanlal

It could be said that most of the Padmarajan- Mohanlal duo films are the ones that are still popular among the audience. Several classic films were born when Padmarajan joined hands with Mohanlal, to name a few- ‘Thoovanathumbikal’, ‘Namukku Parkkan Munthirithoppukal’, ‘Kariyilakkattu Pole’, ‘Season’, ‘Koodevide’, and ‘Deshadanakkili Karayarilla’.

Deshadanakkili Karayarilla

The Padmarajan directorial ‘Deshadanakkili Karayarilla’ is nothing short of a masterpiece from the veteran filmmaker. The film told the story of two school students who run away while on their school tour and unfortunately one of them falls in love with a stranger who has some evil intentions. The film had several prominent casts such as Karthika, Shari, Mohanlal, Jalaja, Jagathy N.K.

Oridathoru Phayalvaan

Pick any movie from Padmarajan’s filmography, you would only come across classic films and the drama film ‘Oridathoru Phayalvaan’ is no exception. The film was written and directed by Padmarajan and had actors Rashid, Nedumudi Venu, Jayanthi and Ashokan playing major lead roles.
