No matter how much they pull each other’s legs or annoy each other, they are always bonded with love. Today, people across India and other parts of the Indian subcontinent are celebrating Raksha Bandhan, an auspicious festival of celebrating the special bond between brother and sister. On this day, sisters tie rakhi to their brother, which is symbolic that the brother is responsible to take care of the sister forever. Movies have often portrayed the beauty of brother-sister relationships. Here’s taking a look at the five best brother-sister duo Malayalam movies have ever seen.

​Ustaad and Pappa from ‘Ustaad’

Every woman would like to have a brother like Ustaad. The 1999 Malayalam movie ‘Ustaad’ showcased the beautiful relationship between a brother and his sister. Ustaad (Mohanlal) is very obsessed with his sister Padmaja aka Pappa (Divya Unni). As their parents passed away very early, Ustaad becomes a father-like figure to his sister. From pampering her with love to doing anything for his little sister’s happiness, Ustaad is a brother that we all would love to have in our lives. Ustaad’s affection for his sister is unconditional that he would even put his life at stake for her happiness. The brother-sister relationship is sure to well up your eyes.

​Chettachan and Meenakshi from ‘Pavithram’

How would a handsome young man of a marriageable age react to the news of his mom getting pregnant again? Not many we would guess. However, Unnikrishnan (Mohanlal) was happy to hear it, as he always wanted a younger sister. Unni’s mom passes away the moment she gives birth to Meenakshi, and Unni’s father Easwara Pillai (Thilakan) is depressed over losing his wife. Unnikrishnan becomes both the guardian and brother of the baby girl Meenakshi. The moment she calls Chettachan (which means brother and father), he becomes one and sacrifices his whole life for his sister. Chettachan’s life only revolves around Meenakshi. Although the movie has a heart-wrenching climax, Chettachan and Meenakshi’s bond is the epitome of sibling love.

​Nandagopal and Ammu from ‘Kaliyoonjal’

The 1997 release Malayalam movie ‘Kaliyoonjal’ portrays the bond between a brother and his pampered younger sister. Nandagopal (Mammootty) and his younger sister Ammu (Shalini) lost their parents at a very young age. Ammu is suffering from epilepsy and so Nandagopal is overprotective about her. From getting the life partner she loves to pampering her with love, Nandagopal is a perfect brother. Although his overprotectiveness makes Ammu dependent, the brother-sister bond is exceptional.

​SP and Sandhya from ‘Chronic Bachelor’

Sathyaprathapan aka SP (Mammootty) has a step-sister Sandhya (Bhavana), but due to several circumstances he has to hide it from her and brings her up as an orphan. SP sponsors the education and all of the financial necessities but doesn’t disclose details about him. But later Sandhya gets to know about her brother and the brother-sister duo's bond is enviable enough. On this Raksha Bandhan, you cannot miss watching the movie ‘Chronic Bachelor’.

​​Aadu Thoma and Jhansi from ‘Spadikam’

Released in 1995 ‘Spadikam’ also portrayed sibling love. Aadu Thoma (Mohanlal) likes his sister Jhansi (Chippy) more than anything. The duo shares a special bond and the emotional scene where Jhansi gets ready for the wedding is a proof to the brother-sister affection. Jhansi chooses to wear only the necklace her brother has presented, as she wants it to be highlighted than the ornaments their parents gave. Aadu Thomas and Jhasi make a perfect brother-sister for sure.
