Surprising facts to know of Aashiq Abu’s upcoming film ‘Neelavelicham’

Expectations are high for Aashiq Abu’s upcoming project ‘Neelavelicham’ and it has also generated a curiosity factor as the ace director is helming a horror film for the first time. The film which revolves around a young and enthusiastic writer who stays in a desolate mansion has the actors Tovino Thomas, Shine Tom Chacko, and Rima Kallingal in the lead roles. As the movie is all set to hit the big screens on April 21, here are some of the surprising facts to know about Aashiq Abu’s horror movie.

Based on the first Malayalam horror film

Aashiq Abu’s ‘Neelavelicham’ is an official remake of the first Malayalam horror movie ‘Bhargavi Nilayam’ which was released in the year 1964. The original movie featured the actors Madhu, Prem Nazir, Vijaya Nirmala, PJ Antony, Adoor Bhasi, and Kottayam Santha in significant lead roles. ‘Bhargavi Nilayam’ which turned out to be a successful venture, was directed by the ace filmmaker A Vincent.

The second remake of Basheer’s story

‘Neelavelicham’ is based on the veteran writer Vaikom Muhammad Basheer’s acclaimed short story by the same name. The story ‘Neelavelicham’ is included in the ‘Pavappettavarude Veshya’ (The prostitute of the Poor) collections which were published in the year 1952. ‘Neelavelicham’s story revolved around a tender relationship between a writer and a ghost girl.

Vaikom Muhammad Basheer’s horror experience

The movie ‘Bhargavi Nilayam’ also had some instances that were taken from other short stories which were based on the real-life experiences of Vaikom Muhammad Basheer. Reportedly, the sequence in the movie where the writer sees a beautiful woman on a beach was taken from Basheer’s real life where he saw a naked woman on a beach suddenly disappearing when he tried to approach her.

The cast change

Aashiq Abu’s ‘Neelavelicham’ had a sudden cast change due to the pandemic and other unknown issues. Earlier, the popular actors Prithviraj Sukumaran and Kunchacko Boban were said to be playing the lead characters in the movie who were later replaced by Tovino Thomas and Roshan Mathew. Asif Ali was also reportedly cast in the movie earlier.
