Mollywood's 'Janapriya Nayagan' Dileep was once hailed as the box office king, but for the past few years he has been not able to pull out a superhit flick. His one of the most recent films 'Voice of Sathyanathan' was hailed as a blockbuster, but now producer Badusha has openly stated that the film turned into a significant loss for him despite high expectations.
Speaking to News18, the producer revealed that the project, which he believed would be commercially strong, did not achieve the business he anticipated.
Badusha said the performance of Dileep’s previous films had already been somewhat subdued which affected pre-release hype and eventual box-office momentum.
He said, “I approached 'Voice of Sathyanathan' with great expectations, but it ended up causing me a loss. Because Dileep’s earlier films hadn’t received much attention, the film’s business didn’t go the way I expected. I had anticipated a big profit. But not only did I not get that, the film became a huge disaster for me.”
Badusha further said that that the commercial underperformance came as a surprise since he had invested with confidence and believed the film would deliver at least moderate gains.
Producer explains why expectations did not match realityAccording to Badusha the gap between projected business and actual revenue widened because the film failed to spark strong initial buzz.
He noted that the industry usually depends heavily on an actor’s recent track record. When that momentum weakens, the pre-release market is affected.
Despite positive hopes during production the outcome did not reflect the efforts put in. Badusha added that he had expected the film’s appeal and theme to attract a wider audience but the response did not meet industry forecasts.
How Mohanlal reacts to financial losses
In another news, producer Santhosh T. Kuruvilla has spoken about a practice followed by Mohanlal, one of Malayalam cinema’s biggest stars.
In a recent conversation with Movie World Media, Kuruvilla said that Mohanlal personally absorbs financial losses when a film fails to recover its investment.
He revealed that this was something the actor himself shared during discussions on the sets of Neerali.
The flop venture 'Neerali' producer said Mohanlal’s approach is rare in an industry where top actors generally keep their remuneration unchanged regardless of box-office results.
Santhosh added, “During the shoot of Neerali, Mohanlal had only two staff members with him. I was also there. There was no one else. We were in Bombay, and we used to talk every day. Our hotel rooms were right next to each other. While talking like that all the time, this came from Mohanlal’s own mouth.”
He added that even for films that became hits, final accounts sometimes showed gaps. Mohanlal had told him that if any financial deficit remained it would be balanced from his own remuneration.
Meanwhile, Mohanlal and Dileep was recently seen together in '
Bha.Bha.Ba.' which received mixed reviews.
