Punjabi celebs who tried their hand in politics

The election season is here, and it made us recall the Punjabi entertainers who tried their hands in politics. Yes, there are a number of Punjabi artists who have dipped their foot in politics. Some of them served for a short term, while some stayed for long. And a brief on them is right here, enjoy reading.

Bhagwant Mann, who is known for his comic timing and fun packed satires made his way to the lane of politics in 2011. He joined the People’s Party of Punjab and also contested in the Lehragaga constituency elections in 2012. Two years later, in 2014 he joined hands with the Aam Aadmi Party and contested elections in the Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency. Currently, he is Punjab AAP chief and Sangrur MP.

Though for a very short span of time, Punjabi actor-comedian Gurpreet Ghuggi was a politician. He joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2014 and from September 2016 to May 2017, he served as the Punjab state convener. Then he got replaced by Bhagwant Mann. Post his replacement he didn’t just exist the respective party, but the whole political world.

Blessed with a soulful voice and often regarded as one of the masters of Sufi singing, Hans Raj Hans also dipped his toes in politics. He joined the Shiromani Akali Dal Party at the beginning of 2009 and in May of the very year, he contested from Jalandhar, Punjab constituency. A couple of years later on 18 December 2014, he resigned from Shiromani Akali Dal. Then in February 2016, he joined hands with the Indian National Congress. However, by the end of the very year, he left Congress and made his way to the Bharatiya Janata Party. There are reports that he might be seen in the political fray this year on a BJP ticket.

The ‘Bikkar Bai Senti Mental’ fame, Jassi Jasraj is another Punjabi celeb who made his way to the world of politics. In 2014, he joined the Aam Aadmi Party and without wasting much of time, he became a part of the party’s electoral fray. Recently, has been fielded from Sangrur parliamentary seat by the Punjab Democratic Alliance.

Famous for his folk singing, Mohammad Sadiq shocked one and all when he not just entered in politics but also defeated the Akali leader and ex-IAS officer Darbara Singh Guru in the assembly elections of 2012. Thereafter from 2012 - 2017, as an MLA he represented the Bhadaur constituency of Barnala district. In 2017 elections, he moved from Bhadaur to Jaitu, and till date, the 77-year-old veteran artist is very active in the respective field.
