Mother's day special: Top 5 on-screen mothers of Pollywood

Defined by their doting nature, possessiveness for the child and unconditional love that no one else in the world can carry, mothers are the most special part of both real and reel life. Yes, even a movie seems incomplete without a mother. So today, as the world celebrates Mother’s day, why don’t we take some time out and pay a tribute to those actresses who essayed the role of a mother on screen.

Kirron Kher in ‘Punjab 1984’

Veteran actress Kirron Kher just raised the bar of acting with her role as Satwant Kaur in the movie ‘Punjab 1984’. She played mother to Diljit Dosanjh, who goes missing after being trapped by a policeman out of revenge. The whole story kind of revolves around how Satwant Kaur does everything possible to find her missing son. There’s a scene in the movie where the inspector beats the old lady for visiting the police station every other day and refusing to leave. Though there are many moments in the movie to touch your heart, that scene, in particular, will certainly leave you in tears.

Nirmal Rishi in ‘Subedar Joginder Singh’

People say that being a soldier is not a task of fatal hearts; however, being a mother of a soldier is something that takes maximum guts. Nirmal Rishi played mother to Gippy Grewal a.k.a Subedar Joginder Singh in the biopic based on the national hero. She very beautifully aced her role. She conveyed the message loud and clear that as hard as it is, for a soldier to leave his family behind, it is equally hard for a mother to send her son on the border where he puts his life on the line. Yet, a mother never thinks twice before waving her son off, for duty.

Gurpreet K Bhangu in ‘Subedar Joginder Singh’

Another actress who played the role of a mother in the biopic ‘Subedar Joginder Singh’ is Gurpreet K Bhangu. She played the role of one of the soldiers of Subedar’s regiment, Santokh Singh's (Jaggi Singh) mother. Though seen briefly in the film, her character left a mark in the minds of the audience. In one of her interviews, Gurpreet confessed her joy of playing a soldier’s mother in the movie and narrated her emotional experience while portraying the role on screen.

Anita Devgan in ‘Jatt & Juliet’ and ‘Jatt & Juliet 2’

"Meri koochi….meri moochi….meri chhonaa”. Hasn’t this dialogue taken you right to the scene where Anita Devgan calls her beloved on-screen son Diljit Dosanjh with such mushy names? Anita is among the cutest mothers Punjabi cinema has on the 70MM. Right from her adorable personality to the way she simply showers all her love, her role in the ‘Jatt & Juliet’ series must have given all the mothers a moment of envy.
6/6

Sunita Dhir in ‘Kande’

Talking of cute mothers on screen, how can we not mention the very beautiful Sunita Dhir! Recently the actress essayed the role of a mother in the movie ‘Kande’. Besides being a loving figure, she played a very strong character. Despite all odds, she raised her son as a single mother. Also, when her son falls into the trap of rivals, she fights all the way to bring him back.
