Vijay, who has been seen pulling off public interest stories stepped into the shoes of a fantasy character, a superhero for the first time. Vijay delivered an impressive performance and the film was filled with punch dialogues. The film dealt with sister sentiments. Vijay, who lost his sister in real life, gave an emotional performance which attracted the fans, while Saranya Mohan played his younger sister in the film.

Genelia played Vijay's friend in the film who cheers him to do social work. Unfortunately, 'Velayudham' has become the actress' last outing in Tamil, as she went off from Tamil films after marrying Ritesh Deshmukh in 2012.

Vijay and Suriya clashed at the box office
Vijay's 'Velayudham' was released for 2011 Diwali, and the film clashed with Suriya's '7aum Arivu', which was released a day ahead. Both films performed well at the box office to transform into a profitable venture for the respective makers. But this was Vijay and Suriya's last clash at the box office, and the two friends didn't meet at the box office, thereafter.
