2023 has been a successful year for Tamil filmmakers as most of the releases made good numbers at the box office and also gained critical acclaim. From 100 crore grossers to record breakers, Tamil cinema witnessed a peak this year. Over 300 Tamil films were released in 2023, and some had record box office collections. 'Leo'
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, 'Leo' features Vijay in the lead role, and the film was released for the occasion of Ayudha Pooja. The film got a solo pan-Indian release. The early positive review for the action drama helped it to a great extent at the box office. 'Leo' grossed over Rs 620 crore to emerge as the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2023.

'Jailer'
Rajinikanth played the lead role in the action entertainer 'Jailer', which was directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. The pan-Indian release with several popular faces hit the theatres last August. 'Jailer' grossed between Rs 615 to 620 crore, and it stands as the second highest-grossing Tamil film of 2023.
Ashok Selvan starrer 'Sabanayagan' postponed

'Ponniyin Selvan 2'
The sequel 'Ponniyin Selvan 2' was released in theatres last April. But the second part of Mani Ratnam's directorial didn’t live up to the hype and received less response compared to its prequel. However, the high-budget drama grossed over Rs 350 crore, and it became the third-highest Tamil grosser of 2023.

'Varisu'
Directed by Vamshi Paidipally, 'Varisu' features Vijay in the lead role, and the family drama was released in theatres for Pongal 2023. Packed with romance, comedy, sentiment, and action, 'Varisu' was well enjoyed by the audience, and the film had an extended theatrical run. 'Varisu' grossed around Rs 310 crore, and the makers officially confirmed the film as Vijay's highest-grossing film. But the record was later broken by 'Leo'.

'Thunivu'
Ajith starrer 'Thunivu' was released for the occasion of Pongal 2023, and the film clashed with Vijay's 'Varisu'. Both the stars had a box office clash after 9 years, which indeed excited the fans. Directed by H Vinoth, 'Thunivu' was packed with action sequences that also sent a social message to fans. The film grossed over Rs 220 crore at the worldwide box office. ‘Thunivu’ is Ajith's all-time highest-grosser and also the 5th highest-grossing Tamil film of 2023.
