Iconic musicians who left behind incomplete legacies in the music industry

It is a sad reality that the music industry has lost many beloved and talented artists in recent times. The music industry has been impacted greatly by these losses, as these celebrities were the faces and voices of the industry. They were trendsetters that shaped the industry and influenced the development of music, both in terms of sound and style. The absence of these beloved artists has left a mark on the music industry, one that will be difficult to fill. On that note, here are the iconic personalities who left a large void in the music industry.

​Vani Jairam ​

Days after being named for the prestigious Padma Bhushan award noted singer Vani Jairam passed away at her home in Chennai. She was 78. Vani Jayaram, after the passing away of her husband Jayaram in 2018, was living alone in her residence at Haddows road in Chennai. One of the immortal voices of the South Indian film industry, Vani Jayaram rendered songs in 19 languages. She won three National Awards and sang more than 10,000 songs in 19 languages, including Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, Gujarati, Odia, Marathi, Haryanvi, Assamese, Tulu and Bengali.

Bamba Bakya​

Popular singer Bamba Bakya, known for having sung several chartbusters, passed away on September 1. He was 49. Bamba Bakya, who has rendered several hit songs including the opening lines of the recently released 'Ponni Nadhi' from Mani Ratnam's magnum opus 'Ponniyin Selvan', passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest. Before rendering film songs, Bamba Bakya was known for rendering devotional numbers. Some of the songs that the singer is known for include 'Pullinangal' from Rajinikanth-starrer '2.0' and 'Simtangaran' from Vijay-starrer 'Sarkar'.

​Kandikonda​

Popular lyricist Kandikonda, known for his work in Telugu cinema, passed away on March 12, 2022. He was 49. He passed away due to reported health-related complications. Musician Smita shared the news on her Twitter handle. The late lyricist had penned several popular and hit songs, including 'Ee Roje Telisindi' for 'Idiot', 'Madhurame Madhurame' for 'Satyam', 'Gala Gala Paruthunna' for 'Pokiri', 'Chennai Chandrama' for 'Amma Nanna O Tamil Ammayi' and 'One More Time' for 'Temper', among others.

Lata Mangeshkar​

Lata Mangeshkar breathed her last at a hospital in Mumbai on February 6. Lata Didi, as she was fondly called by all, passed away at a hospital in the city after prolonged spells of illness including Covid-19. Each of her more than 50,000 songs in 14 languages will ensure her immortality. She has been immortalised in her songs, and each time a song by her is sung, Lataji will come alive. The ashes of Lata Mangeshkar were immersed in the Ganga River by her family members in Varanasi.

​Bappi Lahiri​

Veteran singer-composer Alokesh alias Bappi Lahiri - nephew of the legendary trio of late Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar and Anoop Kumar - passed away on February 12, 2022, due to multiple health issues. He suffered from several health complications and died, due to OSA (obstructive sleep apnea). During his career, he directed top legends like Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, his 'Mama' Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosale, Usha Uthup and many more to create waves with soulful, racy, vibrant and rhythmic music.

​Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry​

Noted Telugu lyricist and writer Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry breathed his last on November 30, 2021, while battling pneumonia at a hospital in Secunderabad. Holding a record of writing lyrics for over 3,000 songs till 2020, Seetharama Sastry is known for his philosophical approach to his songs. Sastry wrote lyrics for many songs in films like 'Swayam Krushi', 'Swarna Kamalam', 'Samsaram Oka Chadarangam', and 'Pelli Chesi Choodu' which made him one of the finest writers of Telugu cinema.

​Krishnakumar Kunnath​

Playback singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK, passed away on May 31, 2022, in Kolkata. He was 53. KK was in the city to perform at a function in Nazrul Manch organised by the Gurudas College. It had been learnt that KK felt sick while he was performing. After returning to his hotel, the singer complained of uneasiness following which he was rushed to a hospital, where the doctors declared him brought dead. Born on August 23, 1968, KK recorded songs in multiple languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu, among others.
