During the early years, Telugu cinema had innumerable ways to hide the inevitable kiss on the silver screen like a bobbing sunflower, the popping of the leg or the fogging the glass. While Bollywood has broken this taboo in 1933 with Devika Rani and Himanshu Rai indulging in an on-screen lip lock in Karma, Tollywood was uncomfortable with the brazen display of affection for a long time. However, with the rapidly changing audience tastes’ and the evolution of society norms, the taboo has evolved to some of the most iconic kissing scenes in recent times.
Akkineni Nagarjuna was among the first Telugu heroes to get involved in a lip lock. In the 1989 Mani Ratnam directorial ‘Geetanjali’, Nag planted a kiss on Girija Shettar’s lips and the moment literally stunned the audience. This has been the talk of the industry for over a decade.
