Assembly Election 2026 Live Updates: People know only BJP can clean up the way TMC destroyed Bengal, says Kiren Rijiju

Assembly Election 2026 Live Updates: Polling for Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and phase 1 of the West Bengal assembly elections concluded on Thursday, witnessing unprecedented voter turnout and setting the stage for a closely watched electoral contest. According to the Election Commission of India, West Bengal recorded a turnout of 91.91%, while Tamil Nadu registered 84.80%, both significantly higher than their 2021 figures of 85.2% and 76.6%, respectively.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar described the turnout as the highest since Independence in both states and praised voters for their enthusiastic participation, calling it a celebration of democracy. The polling process concluded at 6 pm under tight security arrangements, with large voter participation reported across urban and rural constituencies alike.

District-wise data reflected strong engagement. In West Bengal, Dakshin Dinajpur led with 94.85%, followed by Cooch Behar, Birbhum, Jalpaiguri, and Murshidabad, all recording over 90% turnout. Tamil Nadu also saw high participation, with Karur, Salem, Dharmapuri, Erode, and Namakkal among the top-performing districts.

Despite the high turnout, political parties have offered contrasting interpretations. The AIADMK termed the voter surge in Tamil Nadu as evidence of strong anti-incumbency against the DMK government, claiming it reflects public dissatisfaction and signals a possible political shift. The party also credited the Election Commission for ensuring a largely peaceful polling process.

On the other hand, the DMK rejected the anti-incumbency narrative, arguing that the rise in turnout is part of a long-term trend driven by increasing voter numbers and changes in electoral rolls, including the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Party leaders maintained that the turnout figures are not unusual and should not be overinterpreted politically.

In West Bengal, BJP leaders expressed confidence in securing a decisive mandate, linking the high turnout to voter support for change. Statements from party leaders suggested expectations of significant electoral gains, adding to the intensity of the political contest in the state.

Meanwhile, by-elections in Gujarat and Maharashtra recorded comparatively lower turnout levels, indicating varying degrees of voter engagement across regions.

With Phase 1 now complete, attention turns to the remaining phases in West Bengal and the counting of votes scheduled for May 4. The high turnout has intensified political rhetoric across parties, with each camp interpreting the numbers to its advantage. As campaigning continues in pending constituencies, the focus will remain on voter sentiment, alliances, and ground-level mobilisation, all of which will play a crucial role in determining the final outcome of Election 2026.

The controversy stems from a conversation Rijiju referred to in an interview, where he claimed Tharoor had, in some sense, accepted the characterisation of his party during a discussion on the Women’s Reservation Bill.

West Bengal to cast mandate on law and order, Sandeshkhali, RG Kar issues tomorrow
With law-and-order situation in West Bengal under question in the ongoing Assembly election, the rape and murder at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and the Sandeshkhali exploitation and repression in North 24 Parganas district have re-emerged as major campaign issues ahead of the second phase of polls to be held on Wednesday.

Opposition parties in the state have been raising the episodes to underscore allegations of intimidation, violence, and crime against women in the 15 years of Trinamool Congress reign.

Assembly elections were held in 152 of the state’s 294 constituencies on April 23. The rest will go to polls in the second phase on Wednesday.

All the 11 Assembly constituencies in Kolkata – including Kashipur Belgachhia, where the RG Kar Hospital is situated – go to poll on Wednesday, as does Sandeshkhali. (IANS)

Himanta Biswa Sarma accuses Mamata of 'divisive, communal' remark amid West Bengal polls
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accused West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee of a "divisive and communal" remark ahead of the polling for the second phase of Assembly elections.

In an X post, Himanta Biswa Sarma hit out at Mamata Banerjee and alleged that she hinted at fear from one community. Slamming TMC, the Assam CM called West Bengal a "laboratory of appeasement."

Sarma wrote, "Bengal needs to be save, now! The remark of Mamata Didi, that Hindus of Bengal are safe from a certain community only because she is the CM, isn't just disturbing- it's outright dangerous, divisive and communal. A sitting Chief Minister claiming people are 'safe' only because of her, and hinting at fear from one community, is a complete failure of governance and reflects the ground realities of Bengal, how demographic shift has eaten up the land which was once 'Shonar Bangla'."

Exuding confidence in the BJP's victory, he added, "Didi's statement reinforces what the BJP has been saying all along- that under TMC, Bengal has been made a laboratory of appeasement, riots, syndicate, violence, Sandeshkhali style atrocities and fear of the common people. Bengal has had enough of this misrule. It deserves rule of law. 2026 will mark the end of fear. Real poriborton is coming."

WB Elections: People know only BJP can clean up the way TMC destroyed Bengal, says Kiren Rijiju
Union parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju has said that there is a strong wave in favour of Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal and the party wants to the state to become a growth engine of the country again.

In an exclusive interview with ANI, Rijiju said that people realise that only BJP can retrieve Bengal from the way Trinamool Congress has "destroyed" the state.

"In Bengal, the picture has become very clear. I went there and met a lot of people, had meetings. Prime Minister Modi's wave, BJP's wave, has reached the grassroots. And people have come to know that the way Trinamool Congress has destroyed West Bengal, only BJP can clean it up. This has become very clear," he said.

"It is very important for us that there is a BJP government in Bengal because the message that Prime Minister Modi has sent is very clear. West Bengal used to play leadership role whether it is social, political or related aspects. Northeast India was also dependent on West Bengal, and was positively influenced, there was influence of Bengali community, culture...the Northeast gained from Bengal's economy. Now the state has gone down in perception, Northeast followed Bengal but the state now lags in income, it is a matter of pain," he added.

Bengal Election 2026: In Matua heartland, Abhishek hammers on BJP’s ‘betrayal’
Trinamool national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee wound up his Bengal poll campaign at Nadia’s Haringhata on Saturday with a sharp attack on BJP, saying the saffron party had “humiliated and deprived” Matuas by promising them citizenship and jobs.

Accusing BJP of shedding “crocodile tears” for the community in North 24 Parganas and Nadia, both Matua strongholds, Banerjee said: “BJP MLA Asim Sarkar said if names of Matuas are deleted, that won’t be his headache. MLA and Union minister Shantanu Thakur said it will not matter if one to five lakh Matua names are deleted. Now, compare how TMC has stood by you... from SIR form fill-up kiosks to the Supreme Court, we have been with you.”

Despite having all valid documents, Matua names were forcibly removed from the list, he said. “It was said those (Hindus) who came to India by Dec 31, 2024, would be granted citizenship. However, even those who have been here for 100 years had their names removed by the govt of Asim Sarkar and Shantanu Thakur. The names cleared after ‘logical discrepancy’ wouldn’t have been possible if CM Mamata Banerjee hadn’t moved SC,” he said.

Banerjee, however, said “no relationship is one-sided”. “In Harighanta-Kalyani or Bongaon, whether in 2019, 2021, or 2024, you have repeatedly given opportunities to BJP. This is the double engine you were promised. Have you gained anything? It is time to respond to those who betrayed you,” he said.

Bengal Election 2026: Gunfire and stone pelting just hours before PM rally
Hours before PM Modi addressed a rally at Jagaddal in Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district on Monday, clashes broke out barely 400m from the venue between TMC and BJP workers, which escalated into gunfire, stone pelting and crude bomb attacks, leaving a CISF jawan wounded with bullet injuries.

Six others were also injured. The jawan, Yogesh Sharma, has been taken to a private hospital. Police have arrested four people, including TMC councillor Gopal Routh. The EC has sought a report.

BJP’s Noapara candidate, Rajesh Kumar, said the unrest began after he went to Jagaddal police station to file an FIR against CM Mamata Banerjee. He alleged police refused to register it and that a mob of around 200, linked to TMC, stormed the station and attacked him, forcing police to “flee the spot”.

Trinamool candidate Amit Singh disputed his version. “We went to lodge a complaint against BJP for attacking our workers. We were attacked first. Arjun Singh (ex-BJP MP) arrived there, shoving and pushing everyone, as seen in CCTV footage, and sparked the violence,” he said.

BJP workers alleged TMC-backed miscreants targeted Arjun’s son and Bhatpara candidate Pawan Singh’s residence with stones and gunfire. The CISF jawan, part of his security detail, was shot in the leg.

Police said a mob of around 200 entered the station, and later attacked a candidate’s residence with explosives and firearms.

Arjun said Trinamool’s Somnath Shyam, also a candidate, and Barrackpore MP Partha Bhowmick led miscreants in a planned attack to disrupt the PM’s rally. “Shots were fired and bombs were hurled at Pawan Singh’s house,” he said. In turn, Shyam blamed Arjun Singh for bringing “miscreants”.

Meanwhile, Election Commission said a candidate’s visit triggered the mob.

"The BJP is misusing money to an unprecedented extent and also misusing the Election Commission to a great degree. Since Independence, the role of the Election Commission in Bengal this time has created an atmosphere of intimidation that has never been seen before. The intimidation concerning the SIR is a separate issue," he added.

Bengal Election 2026: TMC MP Mitali Bag's convoy allegedly attacked in Arambagh
Trinamool Congress on Monday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attacking the convoy of MP Mitali Bag, as she headed to party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee's rally in Arambagh.

Mitali Bag was reportedly admitted to a local hospital. Officials said the situation in the area remains peaceful at present, with security forces maintaining strict vigilance.

According to an X post by the TMC, the party leader's car was vandalised. The party accused the BJP of "an attempt on her life."

Sharing Mitali Bag's video, TMC posted on X, "Amit Shah threatened our leaders and party workers that anyone who steps out of their house would be hanged upside down. Today, that threat was acted upon. Our MP, Mitali Bag, an elected female representative from the Scheduled Caste community, was brutally and dastardly attacked by BJP lumpens and thugs. Her car was vandalised. Her windshield was smashed. Shards of glass pierced her body. Hear her writhe in agony."

"This is an attempt on the life of an elected Member of Parliament. Amit Shah issued the order from the stage. His lumpens carried it out on the street. The chain of command is direct. The responsibility is his. This is the extent to which the BJP is willing to go when defeat stares them in the face. Violence. Blood. An attack on a woman. An attack on a Scheduled Caste representative. In broad daylight. Without shame," the post read.

He assured the people of West Bengal of progress, employment opportunities, and improved security, saying his government aims to transform the state into a land of prosperity and happiness.

West Bengal Election 2026: 'Bharat ka Bhagyoday, Purvoday ke bina adhura hai': PM Modi says lotus will bloom in West Bengal this time after Bihar and Odisha
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the West Bengal elections are pivotal not just for the state but for the future of the entire eastern India, asserting that "Bharat ka Bhagyoday, Purvoday ke bina adhura hai" (India's rise is incomplete without the rise of the East).

Addressing a Vijay Sankalp Sabha in Barrackpore, the PM highlighted the historical importance of "Ang, Bang, and Kang," referring to Bihar, West Bengal, and Odisha as the three pillars of India's past prosperity. He stressed that for India to become a developed nation, the growth of these regions is essential.

"This election of West Bengal, along with Bengal, is also an election to change the destiny of the entire eastern India, the whole eastern part of Hindustan. In the past, when India was prosperous, it had three strong pillars -- "Ang", "Bang", and "Kalinga". Ang means Bihar, Bang means Bengal, and Kalinga means Odisha. When these three pillars became weak, India's capabilities also suffered a blow. Today, when India is moving forward with the goal of becoming developed, it is very necessary for Ang, Bang, and Kalinga to develop. "India's rise is incomplete without the rise of the East," the PM said.

Projecting confidence in the BJP's electoral prospects, he noted that the party has already seen success in Bihar and Odisha and expressed certainty about a similar outcome in West Bengal. "In the past, Bihar has made the lotus bloom, Odisha has made the lotus bloom, and now it's Bengal's turn. And the atmosphere I'm seeing here, the blooming of lotus in Bengal too is certain. Ang--Bang--Kaling... the trust of the Trishakti is on the BJP," he added.

Trinamool Congress State General Secretary Tanmay Ghosh has expressed confidence over the return of the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government in West Bengal in the assembly elections, claiming that the party will win at least 230 to 250 seats.

Speaking to ANI on Sunday, Ghosh claimed that 'no outsider', including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, will be seen in West Bengal from 11 am on May 4.

"By 11 am on 4th May, you won't find any of these outsiders, be it the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, or CMs from various states, on the soil of Bengal... The remarks come ahead of April 29, the second phase of polling in West Bengal, where people across 142 assembly constituencies will cast their vote.

Meanwhile, as the polling date for the second phase of West Bengal elections comes close, the political heat within the state has intensified with cases of violence and clashes between TMC-BJP workers being reported from several areas.

Assembly Election: 'BJP going to form government with two-thirds majority in Bengal': Sukanta Majumdar

"The TMC syndicate has destroyed the sports ecosystem here. In Kolkata, just a few months ago, what happened, the pictures that reached all the football fans around the world, it was the result of the Maha Jungleraj. I assure players of Bengal that under the 'Khelo India' campaign, a new sports ecosystem will be created in Bengal," PM Modi said while assuring people here that "BJP will give a new boost to Bengal's sports culture."

Assembly Election 2026: 'Bazaar outreach': Mamata Banerjee hits Kolkata markets to connect with vendors ahead of 2nd phase of Bengal polls
As the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections move into high gear, Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee took her campaign to the grassroots this morning, visiting a bustling local market in Kolkata to interact with vegetable sellers and shoppers.

The surprise visit is being seen as a strategic move to reinforce her "daughter of the soil" image and directly address concerns over rising commodity prices, a central theme in the current electoral narrative.

Dressed in her signature white saree and slippers, the Chief Minister walked through the narrow lanes of the market, stopping at various stalls to discuss the day-to-day challenges faced by small-scale vendors.

Banerjee was seen inquiring about the wholesale and retail prices of staples like potatoes, onions, and seasonal greens, often a flashpoint in Bengal politics. She spent time listening to the grievances of women vendors, promising continued support through state-run welfare schemes like Lakshmir Bhandar.

With the 2026 campaign increasingly focusing on Bengal's culinary identity, the visit served as a visual counter to the BJP's outreach efforts in urban markets.

"I come here not just as the Chief Minister, but as one of you. We must ensure that the common man's kitchen is protected from the price hikes dictated by the Centre," Banerjee told a small gathering of vendors.

Bengal polls: Kejriwal asks 90 lakh deleted voters to support TMC and defeat BJP

AAP leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday alleged that a BJP-EC conspiracy led to the deletion of 90 lakh voters from the electoral rolls in West Bengal under the SIR exercise, claiming it was part of a larger plan to target citizenship documents.

Addressing an election rally in Rasbehari constituency here, Kejriwal also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of "insulting" the people of the state by deploying 3.5 lakh security personnel for the Assembly polls.

He urged those whose names were allegedly deleted from the voters' list to support the Trinamool Congress.

"Go and tell your friends, relatives and neighbours to vote for TMC candidates in this election. Didi has to win this fight against the BJP, which wants to take away your citizenship rights as part of a bigger game plan to win the polls," he said.

"Remember, they (BJP) will get your citizenship documents, such as ration cards, cancelled, and only Mamata Banerjee can help you. She will stand by you," he said.

Clarifying his earlier remarks, Kejriwal said 27 lakh names were marked under "logical discrepancy" during SIR, taking the total alleged deletions to 90 lakh.

At a rally in Ballygunge earlier, he had referred to 27 lakh deletions.

Bengal Election: 'I am everywhere': Abhishek Banerjee claims exposure of 'secret meeting' between BJP and election official
In a high-octane escalation of the electoral battle in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee has alleged a clandestine collusion between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and an election official.

Addressing a gathering in his constituency, Banerjee claimed to have "exposed" a secret meeting at a local hotel, framing the subsequent transfer of district police officials by the Election Commission (EC) as an act of political vendetta.

Banerjee provided specific details of the alleged meeting, claiming that a BJP candidate met with an official identified as Purushottam Das in Room No. 208 of the Sagarika Hotel in Diamond Harbour. He asserted that the meeting was intended to coordinate efforts between the party and the EC "quietly."

"A secret meeting was held between the BJP candidate and ES Purushottam Das in Room No. 208 at Sagarika Hotel in Diamond Harbour. They thought they could meet quietly and no one would find out, that they could separately bat on behalf of the Election Commission and the BJP without being caught," said Banerjee.

He further claimed that the incident had been brought to light and action had been taken by the authorities.

"But I am present everywhere, in the air, the soil, in every leaf and vine. Where will they escape? Where will they run? From tea stalls to markets, from food shops to hotels, from sari shops to fruit stalls, from fish markets to the jetty, I am connected everywhere. I have exposed them," Banerjee said.

Assembly Election 2026: Violence erupts in Jagaddal ahead of PM Modi's visit: BJP-TMC clashes, bombing at MLA's residence leave 3 injured
Tensions reached a boiling point in North 24 Parganas on Sunday night as violent clashes broke out between Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters in front of the Jagaddal Police Station.

The unrest comes just hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to hold a high-profile public meeting in the region on Monday.

The spark for the violence was reportedly the tearing of political flags and posters put up for the Prime Minister's visit.

BJP workers accused TMC supporters of desecrating their campaign materials near the Jagaddal area. The situation escalated rapidly as supporters from both sides gathered in front of the Jagaddal Police Station, leading to heated exchanges, stone-pelting, and physical skirmishes that local law enforcement struggled to contain.

In a significant escalation of the conflict, a bombing was reported at the residence of BJP MLA Pawan Singh, contesting from Bhatpara (General) Assembly constituency for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

Crude bombs were hurled at the MLA's house, causing panic in the neighbourhood and significant property damage. At least three people were injured in the explosion. The injured have been rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Polling for Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and phase 1 of the West Bengal assembly elections concluded on Thursday with record-breaking voter participation, setting the tone for a high-stakes electoral battle. West Bengal recorded a turnout of 91.91%, significantly higher than Tamil Nadu’s 84.80%, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI). Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar termed it the highest-ever turnout since Independence, calling it a strong reflection of democratic engagement.

Several districts in West Bengal crossed the 90% mark, while Tamil Nadu also saw robust participation across key constituencies. Compared to the 2021 elections, both states recorded a sharp increase in voter turnout, underlining heightened political mobilisation and public interest.

However, political reactions to the turnout have been sharply divided. AIADMK leaders attributed the surge in Tamil Nadu to strong anti-incumbency against the ruling DMK, while DMK leaders dismissed such claims, arguing the percentage rise is linked to changes in voter rolls and long-term trends.

In West Bengal, BJP leaders expressed confidence of a sweeping victory, linking the high turnout to public support. With polling for remaining phases in Bengal scheduled later and counting set for May 4, the focus now shifts to post-poll narratives, alliances, and voter sentiment shaping the final outcome.
