Assembly Elections 2026 Live Updates: The Election Commission announced the schedule for assembly elections in the upcoming states of Kerala, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam and the Union territory of Puducherry.
With polling scheduled between April 9 and April 23, and vote counting on May 4, the states are set ot witness tough compettition between contesting parties.
Earlier this month, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, visited the poll-bound states to review preparedness.
The Commission has also deployed Central Observers, invoking its plenary powers under Article 324 of the Constitution and Section 20B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, to oversee the conduct of elections and strengthen on-ground management.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday claimed that public sentiment in the state had turned decisively in favour of the BJP.
Rijiju said the mood in West Bengal had shifted towards removing the Trinamool Congress from power and bringing the BJP to office.
"The public mood in West Bengal has already crystallised. The collective sentiment has firmly shifted toward ousting the Trinamool Congress and bringing the BJP to power. It is out of sheer desperation that Mamata Banerjee is making such statements. She should never use such derogatory language against the BJP," Rijiju told ANI.

Defence minister Rajnath Singh launched a strong attack on both the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF), accusing them of misleading the hardworking and honest people of Kerala for several decades.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday reiterated his opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), saying that verifying a person’s citizenship does not fall under the jurisdiction of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Speaking to reporters, Owaisi said a writ petition challenging the move has already been filed and is pending before the Supreme Court. “We are against the SIR, and our petition is currently before the Supreme Court. TN polls: Election flying squad inspects MK Stalins's vehicles
DMK chief M K Stalin’s vehicle was briefly intercepted and inspected by an election flying squad on Tuesday while he was en route to Tiruvarur district for campaigning. The check was carried out soon after he launched his poll campaign from Tiruvarur, the hometown of his father and former chief minister M Karunanidhi. A video shared by the DMK showed Stalin remaining seated in his vehicle as officials conducted the inspection. He was allowed to proceed shortly after.

There are serious concerns that these applications may pertain to individuals who are not genuine residents of Bengal and have no legitimate connection to the state. Similar patterns were reportedly observed prior to elections in Bihar, Haryana, Maharashtra and Delhi," she added.

Assam's people, 128 of them died every year for 10 years. But look at the change which has happened now. In 2016, after this government took charge, immediately from 128 a year deaths, it was brought down to 99 only. In 2018, 14 civilians died. But between 2019 and 2023-24, zero deaths. Tamil Nadu: Case filed against Vijay over poll code violations in Chennai
A case has been filed against Vijay, chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, at Peravallur Police Station for alleged violations of election conduct rules, including breaches of the model code of conduct.
Police acted on a complaint by flying squad officer Kumar, who accused Vijay of flouting norms by using around 30 loudspeakers, obstructing an ambulance route, drawing a crowd of over 5,000 people, and causing public inconvenience.
Based on the complaint filed by the monitoring officer, authorities registered the case under five sections, including public nuisance, obstruction of a public pathway, and unlawful assembly. The case names Vijay along with roughly 5,000 party workers.
