Bharat Bandh today live updates: Public services likely to be hit as over 25 crore workers set to go on nationwide strike

More than 25 crore workers across various sectors — including banking, insurance, postal services, coal mining, highways, and construction — are expected to participate in a nationwide general strike or 'Bharat Bandh' on Wednesday. The strike has been called by a joint forum of 10 central trade unions and their affiliates to protest what they describe as the government's “anti-worker, anti-farmer, and pro-corporate” policies. The unions allege that key decisions are being made without consulting the labour force, and that the government has failed to hold the annual Indian Labour Conference for the past decade.

The forum opposes the implementation of four new labour codes, which they say are aimed at weakening workers’ rights, suppressing trade unions, increasing working hours, removing protections for collective bargaining, and decriminalising employer violations of labour laws. Union leaders argue these measures undermine the country's welfare framework and favour large corporations — both Indian and foreign — at the cost of the working class and public sector integrity.

Demands include addressing unemployment, filling sanctioned government posts, increasing MGNREGA employment days and pay, and introducing similar legislation for urban workers. The unions also criticised recruitment policies that favour retired personnel over new job seekers, especially in sectors like railways, steel, and education — despite the country’s large youth population.

Support for the strike has come from the Samyukta Kisan Morcha and agricultural worker unions, who plan to mobilise large numbers in rural areas. Sectors expected to be affected include transport, coal mining, government services, and postal operations. The strike follows earlier nationwide labour protests held on November 26, 2020, March 28–29, 2022, and February 16, 2023, indicating continued opposition to the government’s economic and labour-related decisions.

Bharat Bandh Live: Kerala observes complete shut down
The nationwide general strike called by ten trade unions on Wednesday witnessed a total shutdown in Kerala.

Across the state, shops, various establishments, public markets, offices, and educational institutions were all closed in response to the strike call by the Left unions. Since the state has a Left rule, the response to the strike call has been complete.

Barring two-wheelers and private vehicles, buses and other transport vehicles are not moving. Even though the state Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar said the state-owned Kerala State Road Transport Corporation will operate, no buses were on the roads.

At Kochi, while some drivers and conductors came to do their job, the CITU employees in these depots refused to let them work, and hence, buses failed to start, even as passengers were left stranded and helpless.

In Kollam, a group of KSRTC employees who took out their bus was roughed up by their protesting colleagues, and the police remained mere onlookers.

In Adoor, the driver of a KSRTC bus was seen wearing a helmet when he was driving the bus.

“I started from Pathanamthitta wearing the helmet because if the protesters stone the bus, the glass pieces might hit my eyes. There were seven passengers, and at Adoor, the protesters stopped us, and our trip came to an end. I am a daily wage driver and I will get paid only if I work, so I came to work,” said the hapless driver.

'Party, which destroyed Kerala's economy ...' Rajeev Chandrasekhar says CPI-M's support to 'Bharat Bandh' "ironic"
Kerala BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Tuesday said it was "ironic" that the CPI (M) whose government had destroyed the "economy" of Kerala over the past nine years is lending support for a 'Bharat Bandh' organised by trade unions in the country.

"It is ironic that a party that has been in government for nine years and has systematically destroyed the economy of Kerala...is today talking about having a strike and making the life of common people hell...We are today losing our talent, losing our youth. And because we are losing our youth, we are losing investments", Chandrashekar said.

The BJP leader and former Union Minister stated that the CPI (M) is a "small political force" and is "limited" to Kerala.

"It is not a nationwide strike. It is a strike, called by the CPI(M) and supported by the Congress. While the CPI(M) may think it represents the nation, it is an extremely small political force, limited to Kerala," Chandrashekar said.

Meanwhile, the BJP leader said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to visit Kerala on July 11 and participate in the inauguration ceremony of the new BJP office. The Union Minister will also kickstart NDA's campaign in the upcoming local body elections.

Bharat Bandh Live: KSRTC buses to operate on strike day: Minister
Kerala Transport Minister K B Ganesh Kumar said that state-run KSRTC buses would continue operating on Wednesday, despite central trade unions calling for a nationwide strike.

Speaking to reporters, the minister said the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) had not received any formal notice from trade unions indicating participation in the strike.

"There is no situation in KSRTC at present that warrants employees joining the agitation," he said.

"As far as KSRTC is concerned, employees are happy and content. The unions have not issued any notice. KSRTC buses will run as usual," he added.

Kumar also pointed out that during a recent protest, only six percent of employees had participated, while 94 percent reported for duty.

"This reflects the changing work culture within KSRTC," he added.

However, trade union sources refuted the minister’s claims, stating that a strike notice had already been submitted and that KSRTC workers would indeed participate in the nationwide agitation.

CPI(M) politburo member M A Baby also dismissed the minister’s remarks, saying the working class and farmers are the backbone of society and are protesting by sacrificing their salaries.

More than 25 crore workers engaged in sectors ranging from banking, insurance, postal to coal mining, highway and construction are expected to go on a nationwide general strike on Wednesday, potentially disrupting services across the country.

A forum of 10 central trade unions and their associates has called for a general strike or 'Bharat Bandh' to "oppose the anti-worker, anti-farmer and anti-national pro-corporate policies of the government".

In a statement, the forum has called for making "the nationwide general strike a grand success", and said preparations have been taken up in earnest by unions in all sectors of formal and informal/unorganised economy.
Over 25 crore workers from sectors like banking, coal, postal, and construction will join a nationwide strike on Wednesday, called by 10 central trade unions protesting the government’s “anti-worker, anti-farmer” policies.

They oppose the four new labour codes, citing threats to collective bargaining, job security, and labour protections. The unions demand job creation, regular recruitment, better MGNREGA support, and rollback of privatisation. The strike is backed by farmers’ groups, including the Samyukta Kisan Morcha. Essential services are likely to be disrupted. This is the latest in a series of strikes against policies seen as favouring corporates over workers and the poor.
