Coronavirus in India: West Bengal reports 14,281 new Covid-19 cases, highest one-day spike

Fresh cases once again touched a new peak of 3.46 lakh in a single day in India while deaths hit a grim new record of 2,600 on Friday. India has now reported close to a million new cases (9.94 lakh) in just three days, while Friday was also the fourth day in a row in which India reported more than 2,000 deaths in 24 hours. Delhi allotted more than its oxygen quota, state govt's responsibility to rationalise it: Dr Harsh Vardhan

Amid complaints of oxygen shortage in Delhi hospitals, Union health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on Saturday said that Delhi has been allotted more than the oxygen quota it had asked for and it is the state government's responsibility to rationalise and plan for it. Dr Vardhan inspected preparedness at the Sardar Patel Covid Care Centre and Hospital, which will be functional for Covid-19 patients from next week. He said, "Each state has been assigned their quota for oxygen as per the production of oxygen in India. Even Delhi has been allotted more than the (oxygen) quota they had asked for, and Delhi CM even thanked the PM for that yesterday... Now to rationalise the quota in a timely manner and the responsibility to finely plan it lies with the state government," said Vardhan.

The deaths in Gujarat include 28 from Surat, 26 from Ahmedabad, 15 from Jamnagar, 14 from Vadodara, 12 from Rajkot, 8 from Bhavnagar, 6 from Sabarkantha and Surendranagar each, and 5 from Morbi among others. The new cases in Gujarat include 5,683 from Ahmedabad, 2,686 from Surat, 701 from Vadodara, and 500 from Rajkot districts.

Maharashtra government to float global tender for Covid-19 vaccine: Ajit Pawar

Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar on Saturday announced that the state government will float a global tender for the Covid-19 vaccine and Remdesivir injections. Pawar was speaking to reporters after holding a meeting with senior officials to review the Covid-19 situation in Pune. The Union government has allowed vaccination for people in the age group of 18 to 45 and the state will commence immunisation for them from May 1, he said. "We have decided to float a global tender for Covid-19 vaccines and Remdesivir under a committee, which will be headed by chief secretary Sitaram Kunte," the deputy chief minister said.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday wrote a letter to all the chief ministers of the country asking them to provide spare oxygen to the national capital."I am writing to all CMs requesting them to provide oxygen to Delhi, if they have spare. Though Central govt. is also helping us, the severity of corona is such that all available resources are proving inadequate", Kejriwal said in a tweet.

Covid-19 surge: Tamil Nadu announces more restrictions; theatres, bars and public worship won’t be allowed

The Tamil Nadu government on Saturday evening announced more restrictions to control the spread of Covid-19. It said cinema theatres, gyms, recreation clubs, all bars, auditoriums and meeting halls would not be allowed to function from 4am on April 26. Big format shops, shopping complex and malls would be not permitted. Public worship will not be allowed in the religious places. Daily rituals can go on with staff alone. Grocery, vegetable and other outlets are allowed following standard operating procedure.
