At least 28 per cent of 40,184 people who had tested positive for COVID-19 between January 22 and April 30 in India were asymptomatic, a study found, raising concerns about the novel coronavirus being spread by those who show mild or no symptoms. A large proportion of both those tested and those positive were asymptomatic contacts, according to the study by ICMR scientists along with other collaborators. Healthcare workers constituted about 5.2 per cent of the total infections, said the study published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research.

Egypt orders the wearing of face masks in public
Egypt on Saturday ordered its people to wear face masks in public, when taking private transportation, and inside government offices as it eases the partial lockdown imposed during the weeklong Muslim holiday of Eid- el-Fitr. Egypt, the Arab World's most populous country, has seen a jump of daily reported infections in the past week, with a total of 879 deaths among 22,082 confirmed cases.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday announced all religious places will remain open from June 1 but not more than 10 devotees will be allowed to enter a shrine at a time. “I would appeal to mandir, masjid and girja to reopen and we will allow 10 people to come at a time. No namaz will be allowed on the streets outside mosques. Committees in charge of the places of worship should keep sanitizers for devotees," she said.

Singapore on Saturday reported 506 new COVID-19 cases, the majority of them being foreign workers residing in dormitories, taking the total number of infections in the country to 34,366. The vast majority of the new cases are work permit holders residing in foreign worker dormitories.

Mosques in Iran to resume daily prayers, president says
President Hassan Rouhani said mosques are to resume daily prayers throughout the country, even though some areas are seeing high levels of coronavirus infections. Rouhani also said on state television that the hours of shopping malls, which had been allowed to open only until 6 p.m., will be extended, a further step in the government’s plans to ease coronavirus restrictions.
