Coronavirus live updates: Maharashtra reports 8,602 new Covid cases in last 24 hours

India reports 38,792 Covid-19 cases, deaths up by 624 in last 24 hours, said the Union health and family welfare ministry data on Wednesday. A decrease of 2,832 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours. Stay with TOI for all the updates:

Indonesia reports record daily increase in Covid-19 infections
Indonesia's Covid-19 task force reported 47,899 new coronavirus infections on Tuesday, the highest daily rise since record began in March 2020, bringing the total of cases to more than 2.6 million. It also reported 864 new Covid-19 deaths, taking the total number of fatalities to over 68,000.

Gene editing 'blocks virus transmission' in human cells

Scientists have used CRISPR gene-editing technology to successfully block the transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in infected human cells, according to research released Tuesday that could pave the way for Covid-19 treatments. Writing in the journal Nature Communications, researchers in Australia said the tool was effective against viral transmissions in lab tests, adding that they hoped to begin animal trials soon. CRISPR, which allows scientists to alter DNA sequences and modify gene function, has already shown promise in eliminating the genetic coding that drives the development of children's cancer.

The developers of Russia's Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine have repeatedly failed to provide data that regulators deem to be standard requirements of the drug approval process, according to five people with knowledge of European efforts to assess the drug, providing new insight into the country's struggle to win foreign acceptance of its product. Reuters reported last month that the European Medicines Agency (EMA)'s review of the drug's safety and efficacy was delayed because a June 10 deadline to submit data on the vaccine's clinical trials was missed, according to one of those people, who is close to the agency, and another person familiar with the matter. The EMA is the European Union's medicines watchdog.
