Lok Sabha Election 2024 Phase 3 Highlights: Phase 3 polls see 61.45% turnout, as per initial EC estimate

Lok Sabha Election 2024 Phase 3 Highlights: At 8 pm, Phase 3 of the Lok Sabha elections witnessed varied voter turnouts across states and Union Territories. Assam led with 75.26% turnout in 4 constituencies, while Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Karnataka followed suit. Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, Goa, and Gujarat also showed active participation. The cumulative turnout for 11 states, covering 93 constituencies, reaches 61.45%. These estimates are approximate, excluding postal ballots, with final counts shared at polling stations' closure.

During the initial six hours of polling in the third phase of Lok Sabha elections across 93 constituencies in 11 States and Union Territory on May 7, the voter turnout reached approximately 40%. However, incidents of violence were reported in West Bengal, and some villages in Uttar Pradesh witnessed poll boycotts.

Maharashtra had the lowest voting percentage at 31.55%, while West Bengal recorded the highest with almost 50% turnout. Notably, the BJP secured victory in the Surat constituency in Gujarat unopposed.

This phase saw the conclusion of voting in Goa (2 seats), Gujarat (25 seats), Chhattisgarh (7 seats), and Karnataka (14 seats). Additionally, voting took place for two Lok Sabha seats in Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. The remaining constituencies up for voting included 4 seats in Assam, 5 in Bihar, 8 in Madhya Pradesh, 11 in Maharashtra, 10 in Uttar Pradesh, and 4 in West Bengal. The polling date for the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha seat in Jammu and Kashmir was rescheduled to May 25 for phase 6.

Lok Sabha Election 2024 Live: BJP caught between rebel & old foe in Shimoga
Families of former Karnataka chief ministers S Bangarappa and B S Yediyurappa are once again locked in a battle for Shimoga Lok Sabha seat that votes on May 7. What makes this round different is the presence of BJP rebel and former deputy CM, K S Eshwarappa, in the fray.

Eshwarappa, a lifelong ABVP/BJP adherent, was denied a BJP ticket in last year’s Karnataka assembly polls. But this time, when the party overlooked his son K E Kanthesh’s bid to contest from neighbouring Haveri Lok Sabha seat, he rebelled. Eshwarappa believes Yediyurappa and his sons engineered Kanthesh’s rejection, so he’s contesting “to teach them a lesson”.
Speaking to TOI, he said he wants to rid BJP’s national leadership of its “illusion” that Yediyurappa and family are indispensable. He is canvassing Raghavendra’s Hindutva voters by telling them the Yediyurappa clan sidelined hard-core ideologues like C T Ravi, Nalin Kumar Kateel and DV Sadan anda Gowda. He is also banking on women’s self-help groups that have benefited from his family-run microfinance company, and the 25,000-odd Tamil ians in the constituency.

Lok Sabha Election 2024 Live: It’s Mulayam legacy vs change, cycle vs bulldozer in Mainpuri
If you came blindfolded from Agra, traversing a broad, spotless multi-lane highway for about two hours and opened your eyes just as the road forks to Mainpuri on the left and Saifai straight ahead, it’d be easy to know you’re in Mulayam Singh Yadav land. The cycle, Samajwadi Party’s symbol, flutters on red and green flags atop tea-biscuit kiosks and hardware shops, houses and institutes, on motorbikes and auto-rickshaws.

It’s as if the landscape itself changes, from the ubiquitous saffron banners that announce their support for BJP in places like Meerut and Mathura, where one might mistake some residential quarters for temple complexes if you looked down from the roof of a tall building.
“See for yourself,” said Manoj Rai Dhoopchandi, sitting behind a large desk in SP’s Mainpuri office that’s packed with milling people. Some have come from as far away as Aligarh and Ayodhya. Dhoopchandi, the election in-charge for SP in Mainpuri, is busy orchestrating the party’s final heave before the May 7 polling. “Iss baar char lakh paar, hum kehte hai (We will win by over 4 lakh votes),” he said.
