NEW DELHI: Leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Saturday tore into Gujarat BJP chief Jagdish Vishwakarma over his alleged “pallu” remark targeting Congress MP Geniben Thakor during local body poll results in the state.Taking to X, Rahul accused the BJP of hiding behind a “mask of Nari Vandana” and described the party as “manuvadi and anti-women” in a scathing post.
“The BJP President of Gujarat has made an indecent remark about our female MP, Geniben Thakor ji. The mask of ‘Nari Vandana’ has come off. This isn’t just shameful—it reflects the BJP’s anti-woman mindset,” he said.

He further questioned the BJP’s commitment to women’s empowerment, asking whether the party could deliver rights or dignity to women. Rahul also alleged that women who challenge those in power are often targeted, saying such remarks expose a “distorted mentality.”Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rahul added that the BJP should remember its own words on respecting women, warning that women across Gujarat and the country would respond strongly to such insults. The controversy stems from remarks made by Jagdish Vishwakarma at a gathering in Banaskantha on Thursday, where he said the BJP had taken control of the district panchayat after 30 years from the “pallu” of Thakor’s sari.Earlier, another Congress MP had also criticised Vishwakarma over the alleged remarks directed at Geniben Thakor.
