id the raging Sengol row, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Sunday said the positions taken by the government and the Opposition on the issue are reconcilable, as he called for embracing this symbol from the past to affirm the values of our present. His remarks come amid a war of words between the Congress and the BJP over the history of the Sengol with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying it was a symbol of the transfer of power from the British in 1947 and should have gotten its due respect after Independence, but was kept on display as a "walking stick" at Anand Bhawan in Prayagraj.

The Congress on Sunday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he inaugurated the new Parliament building, saying that a "self-glorifying authoritarian PM with utter disdain for parliamentary procedures" has opened the new complex.

Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday said the inauguration of the new Parliament building in Delhi was the greatest tribute to Hindutva ideologue VD Savarkar and all Maharashtrians. Shinde also said the political parties which boycotted the event have shown "deep disrespect" to India's democracy and Savarkar, whose 140th birth anniversary is being observed on Sunday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the new Parliament building and installed the scared 'Sengol' in the Lok Sabha chamber. He was accompanied by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

The second phase of the ceremony will begin with the singing of the national anthem in the Lok Sabha chamber in the presence of all the dignitaries including PM Modi.

It is learnt that after the pujas, the dignitaries will examine the premises of the Lok Sabha's chamber and the Rajya Sabha chamber in the new building. It is likely that the sacred 'Sengol' will be installed in the Lok Sabha chamber, right next to the Speaker's chair, after performing some rituals, for which priests from Tamil Nadu, including the original jeweller who designed it, will be present.

The PM is expected to arrive shortly, and the ceremony will begin with a puja which will continue for about an hour.

Responding to superstar Shah Rukh Khan's congratulatory tweet on the new Parliament building, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that the actor has "beautifully expressed" his thought about the "new home for the people who uphold Constitution".

8,000-10,000 personnel have been deployed to ensure that there is no disturbance in the inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament building, says Devendra Pathak, Special CP, Law & Order, Delhi Police.

The rituals ahead of the inaugural ceremony will begin in the morning and is likely to be held in a pandal (canopy) near the Gandhi statue in Parliament. PM Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Hariwansh and some senior ministers in the government are likely to be part of the ceremony.

The second phase of the ceremony will be begin with the singing of the national anthem in the Lok Sabha chamber in the presence of all the dignitaries including PM Modi.

Rajya Sabha deputy chairman Hariwansh will deliver a speech and will then read a written congratulatory message on behalf of Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankar.

A written message by President Droupadi Murmu will also be read out on the occasion.

Two short audio-video films will also be showcased, which will talk about the process of construction of the new Parliament building and its significance.

The Lok Sabha Speaker, who is the custodian of the Parliament, will also deliver a speech on the occasion.

A slot has also been kept for the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha to make a speech. However, Mallikarjun Kharge is unlikely to attend the ceremony.

PM Modi will also be releasing a Rs 75 commemorative coin and stamp on the historic occasion and will also be making his speech on the occasion following which the Secretary-General Lok Sabha will deliver the Vote of Thanks to mark the closing of the ceremony.

PM Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will lead the inauguration ceremony, which will take place in two phases.

A havan and a multi-religion prayer is likely to be held in a pandal (canopy) near the Gandhi statue in Parliament. PM Modi, the Speaker, Rajya Sabha deputy chairman Hariwansh and some senior ministers are likely to be part of the ceremony.

After the pujas, the dignitaries will examine the premises and the sceptre 'Sengol' will be installed in the Lok Sabha chamber, right next to the Speaker's chair, after performing some rituals, for which priests from Tamil Nadu, including the original jeweller who designed it, will be present.

A prayer ceremony will also be organised on the premises of the new parliament building.

The morning phase will end around 9.30am after which the second leg of the ceremony is expected to begin at noon.

Around 20 Opposition parties have decided to boycott the event.

They are Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), DMK, Janata Dal (United), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Samajwadi Party (SP), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Communist Party of India (CPI), Muslim League, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), National Conference, Kerala Congress (M), Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and AIMIM.

Earlier this week, the opposition parties had released a joint statement stating that PM Modi's decision to inaugurate the new Parliament building by himself and "completely sidelining President Droupadi Murmu" was not only a grave insult but a direct "assault on our democracy".
