TVK Vijay Oath Taking Ceremony Live Updates: PM Modi speaks to TVK's Vijay, congratulates him on taking oath as TN CM

TVK chief Vijay on Sunday took oath as Tamil Nadu’s new chief minister after securing the support of the VCK and IUML, taking the number of MLAs backing him to 120 — two above the majority mark of 118.

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam secured recognition as an official political party after crossing 50 lakh votes in its debut Tamil Nadu assembly election, an unprecedented entry for a first-time contestant.

Party founder and actor Vijay personally led from the front, holding strong leads in both Perambur and Trichy East constituencies.

The results marked a significant shift in Tamil Nadu's political landscape, signalling that the state's voters are open to a credible third alternative beyond the DMK-AIADMK duopoly.

MGR, the biggest crossover star from cinema to Tamil Nadu politics, never drank or smoked on screen. He was fair complexioned. For someone who claims to be the next MGR in Tamil Nadu politics, Vijay did - on screen - everything that MGR didn't: he played an alcoholic professor, a gangster, and a morally conflicted man. Yet, he seems to be on the way to becoming the next MGR in politics.

Vijay was a contrarian through his campaign: he avoided media interviews and did fewer public shows than chief minister M K Stalin and opposition leader Edappadi K Palaniswami. On the last day of the campaign, he blew a whistle (his party symbol) and offered a quid pro quo: "Give me one thing I ask - your vote - and I will give you all you ask for five years."

In a major political development, Amma Makkal Munnettra Kazagam (AMMK) on Friday extended its support to All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in Tamil Nadu, while urging the Governor to invite the party to form the government.

In a letter addressed to the Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, AMMK General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran wrote that the party supports AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi Palanisami's claim to form the government. He urged the Governor to invite EPS to form the government and "be sworn in as the Chief Minister of the state."

AMMK secured only 1 seat in the assembly elections. Dhinakaran, in the letter, said that MLA-elect Kamaraj S, supports the party stance.

"I, TTV Dhinakaran, General Secretary of Amma Makkal Munnettra Kazagam hereby extend my full support to the claim of Thiru. Edappadi K.Palaniswami to form the new Government of the State of Tamil Nadu. Our Party Candidate Mr.Kamaraj.S who contested in Mannargudi Constituency (167) have been elected as MLA of the Constituency. Mr.Kamaraj.S MLA of Mannargudi Constituency (167) have also signed this Letter in support of the above claim. It is humbly requested that Thiru Edappadi K.Palaniswami be invited to form the new Government and be sworn in as the Chief Minister, of the State of Tamil Nadu," the letter read.

Tamil Nadu News: Governor cannot question majority stitched post-poll
A governor has no option but to invite the single largest party or a postpoll alliance to form govt after elections and cannot inquire into how the majority support was garnered by the single largest party or the alliance, Supreme Court’s constitution benches have ruled consistently, from the landmark S R Bommai judgment in 1994 to Rameshwar Prasad in 2006.

The Rameshwar Prasad judgment, had castigated UPA govt for dissolving the Bihar assembly and imposing President’s rule on a report from then governor Buta Singh that there was no pre-poll alliance between JDU and BJP and their coming together smacked of horse-trading in MLAs.

Quoting the Bommai judgment, the majority in the 2006 ruling had said, “The action which results in preventing a political party from staking claim to form a govt after an election on such fanciful assumptions, if allowed to stand, would be destructive of the democratic fabric.”

If fanciful claims of horse-trading are taken as the basis to deny the party exhibiting majority support of MLAs to stake claim to form a govt, then “it may also be a handle to reject post-poll alignments and realignments on grounds of the same being unethical, plunging the country or the state to another election,” SC had said.

SC had said, “If, after polls, two or more parties come together, it may be difficult to deny their claim of majority on the stated grounds of such illegality. “These are the aspects better left to be determined by the political parties which, of course, must set healthy and ethical standards for themselves, but, in any case, the ultimate judgment has to be left to the electorate and the legislature comprising also of members of the opposition.”

Laying emphasis on the floor test that must be faced by the party or coalition staking claim to form govt, SC had struck down President’s rule in Bihar and said, “Ultimately, majority shall have to be proved on the floor of the House.”

In the Bommai case, a nine-judge bench had cautioned against misuse of gubernatorial powers to dismiss elected govts or dissolve a duly elected assembly and said, “The very enormity of this power undoing the will of the people of a state by dismissing the duly constituted govt and dissolving the duly elected legislative assembly must itself act as a warning against its frequent use or misuse, as the case may be. Every misuse of this power has its consequences which may not be evident immediately but surface in a vicious form a few years later...”

Tamil Nadu government formation: Congress holds protest across TN against guv
Congress workers staged protests across Tamil Nadu on Friday, accusing governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar of delaying the process of inviting TVK chief Vijay to form the govt.

Demonstrations were held in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore and several district headquarters, with party cadres alleging that the delay was creating room for political instability and possible attempts to lure legislators.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K Selvaperunthagai accused the Lok Bhavan of functioning at the behest of the BJP-led Union govt and said the governor was failing to follow constitutional conventions by not immediately inviting the single largest party to stake claim.

AICC in-charge for TN, Girish Chodankar also criticised the governor, alleging that the delay in govt formation was politically motivated. “The governor has a mission, but he is following Amit Shah. That is his problem,” Chodankar said.

Asked about speculation that rivals DMK and AIADMK could indirectly come together to prevent the TVK Congress combine from forming the govt, Chodankar said such a move would expose the political positions of parties before the people.

“Let them come together. Let everyone get exposed before the people of TN,” he said, adding that several secular parties would not allow the BJP or RSS to gain influence in the state through indirect political manoeuvring.

Chodankar also rejected criticism that Congress had “backstabbed” its former ally DMK by extending support to Vijay’s party after the elections. “In a democracy, people are the masters. We have respected the people’s mandate,” he said.

Tamil Nadu News: DMK cadres attack Congressmen in Mayiladuthurai
Tension prevailed for a while in Mayiladuthurai on Friday as a section of DMK workers chased away and assaulted Congress party workers protesting against Tamil Nadu’s governor-in-charge Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar for allegedly delaying the invitation to TVK leader, Joseph Vijay, to form a new govt.

As part of the statewide protest, Mayiladuthurai Congress unit organised a demonstration presided over by its district president, S Bhanusekar, near the head post office. After the protest, a section of Congress workers was leaving, when a group of DMK workers, approached the spot and argued with the Congress functionaries. Irked over the national party’s exit from DMK alliance after 11 years, the DMK functionaries chased away the Congress functionaries. They raised slogans criticising Rahul Gandhi, and damaged the party’s flags.

Sources said that the discomfort between local Congress and DMK functionaries has been brewing for the past few days. DMK claimed that it worked for Congress MLA Jamal Muhammad Younoos’s victory amid the friction that prevailed. No complaint was lodged, but Mayiladuthurai police are investigating the incident.

Tamil Nadu government: Thiruma to announce decision today, TVK waits
All eyes are now on VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan as the party’s support has become crucial for TVK to reach the majority mark of 118. Despite holding a meeting on Friday with his party seniors to take a call on supporting TVK, he chose not to announce the decision. VCK leaders said he would make an announcement on Saturday.

Sources in VCK and TVK confirmed that VCK has sought cabinet berths for its two MLAs—Vanniarasu and Jothimani, who emerged victorious from Tindivanam (SC) and Kattumannarkoil (SC) constituencies. There were speculations that the VCK chief would be given deputy chief minister’s post. In a bid to facilitate Thirumavalavan’s entry into the assembly, TVK had also proposed to cede the Trichy East seat to him, said sources in TVK.

Thirumavalavan, who has long been keen on returning to state politics, is now expected to contest the byelection from Trichy East. It may be recalled that he had announced his candidature from Kattumannarkoil, before withdrawing and fielding late dalit leader L Elayaperumal’s son Jothimani instead.

VCK leaders chose not to divulge the reason for the leader postponing his announcement by a day. Thirumavalavan had earlier said that he would take a collective decision with the left parties. “TVK has informed us that the support should be in a specific format. We had earlier obtained the signatures of the MLAs in a different format. So the MLAs are returning to Chennai tonight,” a senior VCK leader said.

Later Thirumavalavan paid a courtesy visit to caretaker CM M K Stalin at his Cenotaph Road on Friday night. “Since we have been in DMKled alliance for close to a decade, we want to part ways amicably,” he said.

Tamil Nadu news: 'Power may delay, but cannot suppress people's verdict', Manickam Tagore as Vijay stakes claim on CM post
Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Friday alleged that political opponents who lost public support are now trying to stop TVK chief Vijay from becoming the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu despite the people's mandate.

Manickam Tagore acknowledged a delay in the TVK gaining support from smaller parties to touch the majority mark of 118 seats, and said, "Power may delay the people's verdict, but it can never suppress it forever."

In a post on X, Tagore wrote, "Those who were defeated by the people are once again rearing their heads and attempting to prevent Mr Vijay from becoming Chief Minister. How many more obstacles are they going to create against the people's democratic choice? Power may delay the people's verdict, but it can never suppress it forever. This struggle for the people's rights and justice will continue. "

Meanwhile, the Congress leader S Rajesh Kumar strongly condemned the former ally DMK's alleged violent response to a Congress protest held in Mayiladuthurai against Tamil Nadu Governor, initially denying Vijay the opportunity to form the government.

In the statement issued on Friday, he said the Congress party had organised a democratic protest condemning what it described as the Governor's "murder of democracy" in Mayiladuthurai. He alleged that some individuals associated with the DMK behaved in a politically indecent manner during the protest.

"The actions of the Governor, who today staged a murder of democracy in Mayiladuthurai, were condemned by the Indian National Congress party through a protest that took place. The manner in which some individuals affiliated with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) behaved during this protest represents the peak of political indecency. When a political party conducts a protest in a democratic manner to express its views, attacking those who participate in it is an act that cannot be justified in any way. Differences of opinion may exist; however, violence and threats are antithetical to democracy," the statement read.

S Rajesh Kumar added, "In the political history of Tamil Nadu, such intolerant approaches have rarely found a place. This incident, which goes against political culture and democratic traditions, is strongly condemnable. Those affiliated with the party involved in this matter must immediately take appropriate action and ensure that such events do not recur. Likewise, the police must not stand by idly watching the spectacle; they should identify those involved in the incident and take stringent legal action. It must be remembered that the people will never accept any attempt to disrupt peace for political gain. The Indian National Congress party's stance is that democracy and political civility must be protected in Tamil Nadu."

Tamil Nadu CM news: VCK's X handle suspended amid TVK attempting coalition govt
In a major, dramatic political turn, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK)'s X account on Friday was suspended, citing "violation of X rules." This development comes after a purported post by the VCK in support of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to form a coalition government in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

TVK, which won 108 seats, has sought support from several smaller camps to touch the magical number of 118 seats in the 234-seat Assembly. VCK had won two seats in the 2026 Assembly elections.

VCK is yet to officially commit to supporting Vijay for the coalition government.

The CPI, CPI(M), which has two seats each, and Congress, with five seats, had already extended its support to the Vijay-led TVK at the crucial point, paving the way for a change after the state was led by a traditional Dravidian DMK-AIADMK duopoly. If Vijay takes oath as Chief Minister on Saturday, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi is expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony, which is scheduled to take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium.

Earlier, Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Lok Bhavan, where he formally staked a claim to form the government after consolidating support from multiple parties following the fractured mandate in the recently concluded Assembly elections.

Previously, the CPI State Secretary Veerapandian called it the "democratic duty" of the left parties and VCK to support "the single largest party TVK", which fell short of six seats despite allying with Congress.

"TVK is the single-largest party. It needs six MLAs to form the government. We have given six MLAs of CPI, CPI(M) and VCK. We have given our support; it is our democratic duty. This is a people's democracy. We will stand with democracy, we will stand with people," he told ANI.

TVK MLA-elect Marie Wilson expressed confidence that the news about Vijay's oath would break late at night. "You will get the news by late tonight...We are confident. 100 per cent," he added.

Tamil Nadu news: Left parties help Vijay cross majority mark

The CPI, CPM and VCK extended support to Vijay-led TVK, helping the party touch the crucial majority figure in the 234-member Assembly. The support came after internal discussions among Left leaders amid concerns over possible alternative political alignments.
TVK chief Vijay on Sunday took oath as Tamil Nadu’s new chief minister after securing the support of the VCK and IUML, taking the number of MLAs backing him to 120 — two above the majority mark of 118.

The breakthrough came after VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan announced that his party, which has two MLAs, would support Vijay. Soon after, the IUML, which also has two legislators in the 234-member assembly, extended its backing to the actor-turned-politician.

Both parties have offered unconditional support to Vijay ahead of the swearing-in ceremony.

The announcements of support came just as Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar was preparing to leave for Kerala, where he also serves as governor. Vijay subsequently met Arlekar — their fourth meeting in four days — and finally succeeded in staking claim to form the government.

Vijay will head Tamil Nadu’s first non-Dravidian government since 1967.

In the recently concluded assembly elections, TVK, formed in February 2024, emerged as the single-largest party with 108 seats. The DMK, which lost power, secured 59 constituencies, while its arch-rival AIADMK saw 47 of its candidates win.

Falling short of the majority mark, Vijay first reached out to the Congress, which agreed to back him on the condition that TVK would not align with what it described as “communal forces." Subsequently, the Left parties announced their support.

Congress won five seats in the elections, while the Left parties — CPI and CPM — together have four legislators in the assembly. Vijay, who was elected from both Perambur and Trichy East, will have to resign from one of the two seats, as electoral rules allow a legislator to represent only one constituency.
