The Pulitzer Prize

Pulitzer Administrator Dana Canedy announced the Pulitzer Prize winners for 2019 at the Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism in New York City on April 15, 2019. The Pulitzer Prize administration gives prizes across 21 categories in journalism, and the arts every year. The various categories in arts (Letters, Drama and Music) include-- Fiction, Non-fiction, Drama, History, Autobiography or Biography, Poetry, Music. Each Pulitzer Prize winner receives $15,000 (INR 1042927.50) along with the honour and the lifelong nomer of being a "Pulitzer Prize winner". This year, American singer-songwriter Aretha Franklin was posthumously given the Pulitzer Prize’s Special Citation, “for her indelible contribution to American music and culture for more than five decades," the Pulitzer Prize board said; while prism by Ellen Reid won the Pulitzer Prize for Music 2019. Not to forget, the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction is one of the biggest awards in literature. The Overstory by Richard Powers

Richard Powers' epic nature novel 'The Overstory' won the Pulitzer Prize 2019 for Fiction. "An ingeniously structured narrative that branches and canopies like the trees at the core of the story whose wonder and connectivity echo those of the humans living amongst them," reads a statement in praise of the book on Pulitzer.org . The novel was also shortlisted for the 2018 Man Booker Prize and the PEN/Faulkner Award, which is yet to be announced.

The New Negro: The Life of Alain Locke by Jeffrey C. Stewart

Jeffrey C. Stewart's biography 'The New Negro: The Life of Alain Locke' won the Pulitzer Prize 2019 for Autobiography or Biography. The book gives "a panoramic view of personal trials and artistic triumphs of the father of the Harlem Renaissance and the movement he inspired," reads a statement on Pulitzer.org .

Amity and Prosperity: One Family and the Fracturing of America by Eliza Griswold

Eliza Griswold's book 'Amity and Prosperity: One Family and the Fracturing of America' won the Pulitzer Prize 2019 for Non-fiction. The book is "a classic American story, grippingly told, of an Appalachian family struggling to retain its middle class status in the shadow of destruction wreaked by corporate fracking," according to Pulitzer.org .

Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom by David W. Blight

David W. Blight's book 'Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom' won the Pulitzer Prize 2019 for History. The book is "an important environmental history of the Gulf of Mexico that brings crucial attention to Earth's 10th-largest body of water, one of the planet's most diverse and productive marine ecosystems," according to Pulitzer.org .

Be With by Forrest Gander

Forrest Gander's poetry collection 'Be With' won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry 2019 for being "a collection of elegies that grapple with sudden loss, and the difficulties of expressing grief and yearning for the departed," according to Pulitzer.org .

Jackie Sibblies Drury's play 'Fairview' won the the Pulitzer Prize for Drama 2019. The play is called "a hard-hitting drama that examines race in a highly conceptual, layered structure, ultimately bringing audiences into the actors' community to face deep-seated prejudices," by Pulitzer.org .
