Importance of amla

When it comes to winter foods, amla, also known as Indian gooseberry, is often considered as a superfood. It is a powerhouse of nutrients, which is also Ayurveda-approved for its medicinal benefits. Rich in vitamin C, polyphenols, flavonoids, and tannins, it is a fruit that is beneficial for people of all age groups. As per the Journal of Medicinal Food, 2006, the high vitamin C content and polyphenols of amla help improve white blood cell function. And the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2000, states that MLA neutralizes free radicals, reduces oxidative stress, and protects cells from premature aging, inflammation, and chronic disease. It's the sharp, sour and astringent taste of amla with a slightly bitter aftertaste that people often avoid. But, there are foods that can be combined with amla, which not just boosts the taste but nutritional values too. Take a look at foods that one can pair with amla and why.

What do experts say?

In a recent video post on Instagram, Shweta Shah, a celebrity nutritionist also mentioned that amla during winter months is excellent, boosts immunity, and supports digestion as well. And according to celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, regular consumption of amla in winter helps prevent colds, coughs and flus and even helps recover from such illnesses. It also helps burn fat, improves insulin sensitivity and regulates blood sugar. In her social media post she has also mentioned that amla regulates production of cholesterol and has cardio-protective abilities. It is also useful for those who have a tough time waking up, are around puberty, have bad PMS or endometriosis. And Dimple Jangda, a wellness and nutrition expert states that as a rich source of vitamin C and antioxidants, amla helps fight plaque in your arteries and also reduces cholesterol, triglycerides, and improves your overall immunity and cardiovascular health. She also suggests that one can have amla in a powdered form. "Make sure to consume one amla every single day in the morning, as long as you don’t have a burning sensation or any allergies from amla", she warns.

Honey

Amla with honey not just cuts the astringent taste but also adds a lot of benefits. On one hand, amla helps strengthen the body’s natural defense system, and on the other hand honey soothes the throat, supports gut health, and provides quick energy. The combo also helps fight infections, reduces inflammation, and supports respiratory health.
How to combine: The best way to consume them is to mix tsp of amla powder or fresh amla juice with 1 tsp of raw honey on an empty stomach. One can also consume them by soaking amla in honey overnight, along with some broken black or green peppercorns, as suggested by Sadhguru.

Turmeric

It is said that when vitamin C of amla meets curcumin of turmeric, the combo works like a protective shield that boosts the immune system, reduces inflammation, and detoxifies the body. They also help fight free radicals, boost white blood cell function, and support respiratory health.
How to combine: One can always add freshly grated turmeric to amla water and drink it in the morning. Also, they combine well in smoothies using leafy greens like spinach. All you need to do is combine the greens with amla, carrot, and turmeric and blend into a smoothie and drink in the morning.

Ginger

It is also suggested to combine ginger with amla for added benefits. As per experts, the warmth of ginger and bitter punch of amla makes for a perfect combo for strengthening immunity. It is said that ginger boosts circulation and fights inflammation, and amla with its vitamin C and antioxidants content helps enhance the body’s natural defense system.

How to combine: One can combine 2 tbsp fresh amla juice with 1/2 tsp grated ginger and blend with 1/2 cup of water. Add a few drops of honey and consume in the morning.

Lemon

They both are proven to be rich in vitamin C and work together as a natural immunity booster, which helps fight infections, detoxify the body, and keep your skin glowing. It is also said that their antioxidant properties strengthen white blood cells and support overall wellness.
How to combine: One can combine 2 tbsp amla juice in a glass of lukewarm water and stir in 1/2 tsp lemon juice and drink on an empty stomach to gain maximum benefits.

7/7

Jaggery

It is said that combining amla with jaggery is a tasteful combination and people often use the combo while making murabba. The combo is said to improve digestion, boosts iron absorption, and provides warmth to the body as well.
How to combine: Steam the amla and de-seed them and then cook them in jaggery syrup and top it with salt, pepper, and cumin powder to add that extra flavour.
