Teething is one of those baby phases that looks cute in theory, the tiny tooth popping out, all those drooly grins, but in real life, it’s a full-blown drama. Sore gums, cranky moods, constant chewing on random things, and of course, the struggle to feed them anything without tears. (Theirs or yours.) When babies are teething, even their favourite foods suddenly seem like the enemy. They don’t want anything too hard, too warm, or too annoying to chew. But they still need nutrition, maybe even more so now, with all that growth happening. So the trick is to go soft, soothing, and smart. You want foods that are gentle on their gums, packed with goodness, and maybe even offer a little relief along the way. Here are six baby-friendly foods that do the job beautifully when teething turns meals into mayhem.

Stewed apples

Warm, soft, and naturally sweet, stewed apples are a comfort food even grown-ups wouldn’t mind. Peel and cook them down till they’re mashy, maybe with a tiny pinch of cinnamon if your baby’s ready for it. Apples are full of fibre, help with digestion, and have just enough natural sugar to keep babies interested. Bonus: if served slightly cool, they can also feel soothing on sore gums.

Chilled banana mash

Bananas are one of the easiest, safest baby foods out there and when teething hits, keeping them in the fridge for a while before mashing makes all the difference. The coolness helps numb the gums a bit, and the soft texture is just right for babies to gum without effort. Potassium, fibre, and natural sweetness make this one a win across the board.

Moong dal khichdi

Comforting, soft, and easy to digest — a well-cooked moong dal khichdi is practically made for moments like these. Moong dal is light on the tummy but still gives enough protein and energy to keep your little one going. Just skip the spices or keep it super mild. Slightly overcook the rice and dal so the texture stays smooth and easy on sore mouths.

Ripe papaya

Papaya is another gentle fruit that works great during teething. It’s naturally soft and requires minimal chewing. It’s also full of vitamin C, good for digestion, and slightly cooling by nature which can help calm those hot, inflamed gums. Just make sure it’s ripe and mashed or cut into very soft chunks your baby can manage.

If your baby tolerates dairy well, curd rice is a soothing option. Cool, soft, and mild in taste, it can be a real comfort food during a teething spell. Curd is great for gut health, helps cool the body, and rice gives gentle energy. Just keep the texture soft and skip any sharp seasonings or pickles you’d normally add for adults.

Soft vegetable puree

Simple is best. Boil veggies like carrots, pumpkin, or bottle gourd till they’re completely soft, and blend them into a smooth puree. These vegetables are naturally sweet, easy to digest, and full of vitamins. You can mix them with a little cooked rice or moong dal if your baby’s ready for combinations. Serve them lukewarm or slightly cool, depending on what feels better on their gums.
