Milk is a rich source of calcium and other nutrients. It is said to be high in protein, and essential vitamins like B12 and D, which support strong bones and teeth. It also helps in muscle repair and keeps you feeling full and energized throughout the day. In this hustle and bustle of daily life, milk pouches have made our lives easier. But, have you ever thought how these glossy plastic milk pouches impact the environment? According to experts, the environmental impact of plastic milk pouches in India is staggering. A recent report has estimated that around 120 million milk pouches are sold and discarded daily in India. To combat this and protect the Earth, one of the largest dairy brands has launched self-degradable milk pouches. Scroll down to read the details.
Which brand introduced self-degradable milk pouches?
According to reports, Mother Dairy, one of India’s largest dairy brands, unveiled what they claim to be the country’s first naturally degradable milk pouches for its cow milk variant on 2 June. The official statement mentions that degradable pouches, which decompose naturally in soil without leaving behind microplastics, will roll out across Delhi-NCR on 5 June.
How will it impact your pocket?
According to Meenesh Shah, chairman of Mother Dairy and National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), “There will be no added cost for the consumer.” He assured that the dairy company will not increase its prices for the degradable product. He called this launch a step towards reducing plastic waste and promoting environmental responsibility.
How will it impact the environment?
According to media reports, they developed a naturally degradable milk pouch after over four years of research. These pouches will degrade completely within a few years when disposed of properly in soil conditions—a stark contrast to conventional LDPE (low-density polyethene) pouches that persist in the environment for centuries. The technology has been developed with the help of a Europe-based research company and has been tested at an independent NABL-accredited laboratory for biodegradability and eco-toxicity.
What is the motive?
Their motive is to address the challenge of fugitive plastic. The pouches will transform into bioavailable wax, which the company claims is then broken down by natural microbes present in the soil. This initiative coincides with World Environment Day 2026, whose theme, “Inspired by Nature,” focuses on climate action and working for a sustainable future.
Where will it be available?
For the first phase, they are launching in Delhi-NCR and will gradually plan to extend the degradable packaging to other milk variants and possibly other regions in the future, depending on consumer response and operational feasibility. .
